Two weeks ago I posted a Vine video I created of my students going around our school to complete an “Amazing Race” style activity to complete six different activities related to our reading of To Kill a Mockingbird. A handful of people tweeted me and asked me to share the activity. I am a big proponent of of learning stations and I wanted to put a spin on learning stations by making these activities a competition among students and setting up the stations around the school using clues related to the novel.

For example, one clue read Scout said, “Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read.” Where can Scout fuel her passion for reading? Here is where you can find the next task on your TKAM Amazing Race. Each group of students were given a map with QR codes that led them around the school to then complete the text based activities. Below are the six activities I asked my students to complete throughout the two day “Amazing Race” competition. 1. 2. 3. What is a caste system? 4. 5. I recently heard someone quip that proposals to cut the Academy Awards are tantamount to suggesting that the NFL trim down the Super Bowl. Certainly for many who would rather watch the former any day of the week, even the play-by-play of technical categories repays attention. Yet people who think of the Oscars as a major sporting event with big stars and blockbusters going head-to-head can still appreciate the show as more than spectacle. How else, for example, would most of us learn about brilliant animated short films like the National Film Board of Canada’s Animal Behaviour, made by husband and wife team Alison Snowden and David Fine and nominated in this year’s Oscars?

(See the trailer above.) Snowden and Fine previously won an Oscar in 1995 for Bob’s Birthday, a hilarious short about an unhappy British dentist. Since 2002, hundreds of thousands of people around the world have logged onto a website run by Harvard University called Project Implicit and taken an “implicit association test” (IAT), a rapid-response task which measures how easily you can pair items from different categories.

To create this new map, we used data from a version of the test which presents white or black faces and positive or negative words. The result shows how easily our minds automatically make the link between the categories—what psychologists call an “implicit racial attitude”. Each country on the map is colored according to the average score of test takers from that country. In every country in Europe, people are slower to associate blackness with positive words such as “good” or “nice” and faster to associate blackness with negative concepts such as “bad” or “evil”.

No matter how you approach it, assessment is one of the most essential parts of formal education. And this year's reader interest shows that folks are really starting to question traditional practice as it pertains to grades in particular. Whether we talk about the how or why of assessment, it always comes back to the communication of learning and different things that dilute that discussion. Here are this year's top posts, most centering around assessment: How Can Students Focus on Learning When Educators Only Care About Grades? - As education continues to shift, we need to evaluate the long-held systems in place. Since assessment of some kind will always be a part of the educational process, we must make sure to be intentional in when, how, and why we assess students.

There are some tutorials that require more than text to be understood by readers. By creating step-by-step instructions using visuals, you can key readers into details that may otherwise not have been communicated. Those visuals could be still images or screenshots, animated GIFs, comparison charts, or videos. On top of helping readers understand your content, visuals also break up the monotony of a large amount of text. In the last year, I’ve been working as a technical writer for Joyent writing instructions and creating videos geared towards users of all skill levels.

This requires precision — people rely on me to create step-by-step instructions and guides for a technical task. If I miss a step or assume that readers already know a piece of information, they may walk away frustrated and never come back to our content. On the other hand, if I’m too detailed the content could feel excessive and rambling, as well as require more frequent updates.

Consider the following: Example outline. ELA: Giving Feedback on Digital Work- Feedback in a Flash! QFT Procedure 1st time - Google Slides. The image in english language teaching 2017. Going gradeless…tug-of-war | Parent Teacher Conferences. As teachers, we are constantly trying to strike the balance between what our students need right now and what they need, or might need, for whatever comes next. I’m confident that regardless of the grade level, our ideas about the “next level” come into play when making decisions about what we do on this day. This was certainly the case when I taught high school, as we were never very far from the sense that we were preparing our students for college. This was particularly true when working at a school that had “preparatory” in its name. Even within the school, though, those of us that taught different grade levels could feel this pull of “what’s next” regularly. In fact, I’m certain that on multiple occasions I said something akin to “when you’re a sophomore, you’ll need to…” to my 9th graders, or “when you’re a senior, it will be important that you know that…” to my sophomores.

As a 7th grade teacher now, in a school that ends at 8th grade, this pull is ever-present. Like this: The Productive Struggle: Why I Stopped Overteaching – Being Teacher. Gsl for rr hs kit excerpt 1. One of the most important goals of any English class should be to help students learn how to express themselves to an audience — how to tell their own stories, how to provide much-needed information, and how to convince others to see things from a different perspective. Below are some essays students can read, not only to help them see how such writing is done in the real world, but also to learn more about the world around them. Note: This is a living list. I will continue adding to it as I find important essays and articles, and as my readers make suggestions.
