Members so far: 420 / Visit The International Organization for a Participatory Society web system has now launched. This was inspired by a poll on Z and you can see some early information about it using the left menu IOPS Project entry. Now, however, you can go to the actual site, see how it works, see the organizational description and other content, and decide if this is for you! IOPS means to become a large, powerful, international organization composed of branches in countries that are in turn composed of chapters in cities. Already many and soon perhaps most or even all of Z's familiar writers will be part of IOPS. http://www.zcommunications.org/znet

When citizens of a city put on their fancy clothes for a swanky food festival, there are certain expectations: That it will be packed, that it will be delicious, and that there will be some really strange things served. Every one of these assumptions rang true at Second Harvest's 22nd annual Toronto Taste event last Sunday, held to raise funds for more than 700,000 meals to be served to those in need. Supported by the Daniels Corporation, with tickets selling for $250 a pop, Toronto Taste showcased the wares of 60 of the city's top food purveyors, and 30 beer and wine companies -- though with 11,000 restaurant options in the city, it's no surprise those participating tended to be from the upper end of the price scale.

http://www.indymedia.org/en/index.shtml Legislation is currently before the Australian Senate to extend the Northern Territory Emergency Response (often called just The Intervention) in 73 aboriginal indigenous communities for another 10 years. The intervention was instituted in 2007 by the conservative Howard Government claiming it was to stop domestic violence and child abuse in indigenous communities. But others like John Pilger claim it was a land grab , about mining or " smashing Aboriginal organisations, demonising Aboriginal people and forcing migration ". It arose from the Northern Territory Government Inquiry into the Protection of Aboriginal Children from Sexual Abuse . Investigative journalist John Pilger has debunked the reason for The Intervention with statistics saying in 2010 : "Out of 7433 Aboriginal children examined by doctors, 39 were referred to the authorities for suspected abuse. Of those, four possible cases have been identified.
