Natural Building with Cob

Earth is probably still the world’s commonest building material. The word cob comes from an old English root meaning a lump or rounded mass. Cob building uses hands and feet to form lumps of earth mixed with sand and straw, a sensory and aesthetic experience similar to sculpting with clay. Cob is easy to learn and inexpensive to build. Because there are no forms, ramming, cement or rectilinear bricks, cob lends itself to organic shapes: curved walls, arches and niches. Cob has been used for millennia even in the harsh climates of coastal Britain and Ireland. How is cob different from adobe? Why doesn’t it wash away in the rain?

What about earthquakes? Isn’t it cold and damp inside? Natural Building Workshops for 2016 hosted by naturalhomes.org. School of Natural Building (SNaB) Training Programme Natural Building involves intuition, skill, knowledge and experience.

School of Natural Building (SNaB)

The School is aimed at people who want to acquire natural building knowledge & skills. Subsequently this learning could be used in various situations depending on ability and aspirations i.e. building your own house, working with others on a natural building project, designing better strawbale buildings, teaching or just for fun! We are particularly looking for women who would like to be natural builders. Only 1% of workers on the tools in mainstream construction are women, but we estimate that women make up at least 30% of workers in natural building. Becoming a Natural Builder is most suitable for people who are self-employed, or work part time, as we will not be able to offer full time work, and we expect that you will have other forms of income as well. There is no fixed starting date for the School as each trainee has a bespoke Learning Contract.

Traditional and Natural Building Courses in Suffolk, UK. Woodsman, coppicer and natural eco-builder of the Roundwood Timber Framed Woodsman's Cottage. Training - UK Hempcrete. As well as having excellent sustainability credentials, hempcrete is a fun, rewarding material to build with and, once a few important principles are understood, the technique of hempcrete mixing and casting should should not be beyond the reach of any builder or competent DIYer.

Training - UK Hempcrete

However because the materials are by their very nature quite different from conventional building materials, there have been many instances where novice hempcrete builders, through lack of understanding, make simple mistakes (often with the detailing of the material, or the construction technique itself) which can cause unnecesary headaches on a build. At UK Hempcrete we are keen for hempcrete to be used as much as possible, but it is important that builders develop the necessary skills and understanding to use it properly.

To help disseminate quality information about the use of hempcrete in construction, we have written The Hempcrete Book and we also provide hempcrete training to suit a range of needs. A Complete Build - the Multipurpose Roundhouse ShelterJuly 8th 4pm - July 19th 11am 2016 A reciprocal frame roundhouse is a beautiful structure and yet is deceptively straightforward to build. This makes it ideal for a self builder as a first building project. On this course we will use local timber to create a large 'shed sized' roundhouse that anyone can then recreate as a multipurpose shelter. For this course you don’t need any experience, but you do need lots of enthusiasm, and a commitment to learning and working in a team.

This course is run by experienced self-builder Nigel Lishman who has worked with both Simon Dale and Ben Law, and has built roundhouses and cruck frame buildings. The course fee includes all tuition and will be fully catered serving delicious, mostly organic & locally sourced vegetarian food. Other options: Building with Hemp Lime course. Just cobbled together. Louise Roseingrave gets her hands dirty as she finds out if cob houses really do offer the dream option of a cheap and efficient self-built home without a mortgage THE devastation caused by the fallout of the Irish property boom left a sour taste in my mouth. I need a place to live, however, and so began a mission to explore alternative methods of building. Within weeks, on a sunny Saturday morning, I found my welly-clad legs squelching in the muck of the most primitive building site imaginable. Women's Natural Building Workshop - I CAN FEED MYSELF.
