How to Make Apple Cider with a DIY Press

While our yard is much smaller than we would like, this apple tree is the centerpiece that ties it all together and really makes it feel like a mini homestead. Well, that and the chicken coop, of course! Since our house had been unoccupied for several months before we moved in, the tree was in serious need of some pruning, but it was the wrong time of year for that. So, we just let it go, thinning the apples as much as we could to hopefully avoid disaster.

Combine that with a good amount of rain this past winter (finally!) I am not going to go over the building of the press here, because we literally followed the instructions on the Quarto Knows site exactly. The first step is to collect a bunch of apples. We do not know the variety of our tree, but we have discovered that it has been grafted with two types, one red and one green. Save. Mr. Hacker. 10 Simple Drill Machine Life Hacks. Man Builds Trap That Catches Thousands Of Horseflies

She lives in Brooklyn, NY. If you’ve ever been bitten by a horsefly, you know how painful — and then itchy — it can be. Usually, horseflies try to bite horses and cattle, but they are also known to bite other animals, including humans. Some areas are known to have a lot of horseflies, which can make outdoor recreation completely miserable. The University of Kentucky explains that while male horseflies feed on nectar, female horseflies only feed on other living beings — once they land, they bite using their knife-like mouths to feed on blood. Although humans can use insect repellants to avoid horsefly bites, animal insecticides may wear off more easily (and animals can’t reapply insecticide by themselves) — horses and cattle have to put up with these pests all summer long.

Dan Owsley was concerned about his horses, so he decided to build a trap to try to catch and kill horseflies — and it worked better than he ever could have imagined! There are lying there as waste, waiting to be reclaimed by people,” Pedros writes. “Joining Bottles seeks to contribute to new beliefs based on what we, as individuals and communities, can do with what is available to us.” In the project, Pedros demonstrates how she collects discarded bottles from the streets, and, by applying heat, turns them into a wood bonding material, with which she creates new functional structures, such as tables or stools.
