Download Bio. French newspaper removes all images in support of photographers. “A visual shock. For the first time in its history, Libération is published without photographs. In their place: a series of empty frames that create a form of silence; an uncomfortable one. It’s noticeable, information is missing, as if we had become a mute newspaper. [A newspaper] without sound, without this little internal music that accompanies sight,” writes Brigitte Ollier, a journalist Libération‘s Culture desk. Ollier is right, and by choosing to maintain the newspaper’s usual design – with its articles flowing around the spaces where images should have been shown -Libération has succeeded in its attempt to show the power and importance of photography in our understanding of world events.

The French newspaper explains its decision with these opening words, published on its front page: “Libération vows an eternal gratitude to photography, whether produced by photojournalists, fashion photographers, portraitists, or conceptual artists.

Wim Wenders Presents the Dresden Peace Prize to James Nachtwey. On Feb. 11, TIME contract photographer James Nachtwey was awarded the Dresden International Peace Prize, an award given to those who go above and beyond to prevent violence. Oscar-nominated director Wim Wenders presented the prize. These are his remarks on Nachtwey, war and the power of photography: If a war photographer is awarded a Peace Prize, furthermore in a city once devastated by a war, then he must be a very special person and a truly extraordinary photographer.

And he must have something to oppose to war. For it is the nature of war to engage and take in everything, to occupy and appropriate, without exception. Which war film, for example, isn’t, deep down, a glorification of war, even against better judgment, and often even in spite of the best intentions? And: It is in the very nature of images to represent what they depict. War is a huge, infernal industry, the largest one on this planet. Just make the effort and visualize it for yourself! How can that be possible? Yes! About | the literate lens. The Literate Lens is a bi-weekly blog that investigates connections between photography, art and literature, aiming to bring more depth to the cultural conversation around camera art.

Welcome! I’m Sarah Coleman, a writer and editor based in New York City. I’ve always been interested in both literature and visual art, especially photography. For many years I wrote about books, art, film and photography for a number of publications including Salon, the San Francisco Chronicle, Art News, New York Newsday and Photo District News.

I still contribute to some of those publications (my journalism web site is here) and I’m also now getting back to my Fiction MFA roots by writing a novel set during the early days of documentary photography. I’m fascinated by the way photographs convey information. The Literate Lens stands at the junction of photography, art and writing. Please comment, join the conversation! Header image by Akbar Sim. EmailEmail Incredible miniature model artist Michael Paul Smith has created a wonderful series of photographs illustrating the cars in a 1950s American town of his own imagination called Elgin Park.

The artist uses clever forced perspective tricks to place the vehicles he creates into real-world life-sized settings, and his painstaking attention to detail ensures that the miniature model cars hold up to the scrutiny of a close-up shot. Luckily, he also provides us with paired shots to show how he created the perspective illusion. You can find more photos on his website or his Flickr. Source: Michael Paul Smith. One of the many reasons contributes for the rising popularity of 35mm SLR photography is due to the rangefinder camera's limited ability to use long lenses for the extended reach - typically, 135mm is the longest focal length that provide an outline inside the frame line for any rangefinder camera model. The single lens reflex camera revolutionized the world of telephoto lens usage and the superiority and convenience of direct reflex viewing is evident.

With the SLR, there is virtually no limit to lenses with focal length usage and thus opens up enormous photographic potential and applications. With only 1/6th the angle of view of a 50mm normal lens at around 8°. Birthday Photography Tips | Event Photography Tips. Home | The Center for Fine Art Photography. The Photographer Exhibition.

ARHEOLOGIJA JEDNE ERE: Pogledajte najdojmljivija komunistička zdanja istočne Europe. Ritn by: Ivor Fuka | 12.08.2013.

Baby Photos - NYIP Photo Articles. Editor's Note:Here's the first of a two-part feature on how to photograph babies and young children. In this article, we concentrate on babies and toddlers. In our second piece we discuss photographing slightly older children. If you apply what we cover in these two articles, we guarantee you'll take better pictures of your children (or your neighbor's) than ever before. That's a promise! Babies are the Number One subject of photographs the world over! Truth is, we never cease to be amazed at how uncritical parents are of the prints they have of their kids. Here's a photo that probably was judged good enough to send to Aunt Tina to show her...who?

What's the solution? Babies make this easy because NYI's first Guideline - What's your subject? Baby itself; or Baby with parents or with family or friends; or Baby discovering the world. If you're the proud parent — or if you're photographing someone else's baby — it still comes down to these three things. NOW, before we go any further... (*) The Only Magic Left is Art — Submit. Fellow Illusionists, Show us your magic. 1. Watermarks - We understand that you don’t want your work to be plagiarized. But if your name is plastered all over your art piece, it becomes an eyesore that nobody wants to look at. Exceptions will rarely be made unless it is strategically placed. 2. Poor Image Quality - That’s awesome that it took you 13 hours to finish that painting. But if you take a picture of it with your phone, or it’s just a bad image in general (ie. poor lighting, not true color tones, pixelated, shadows) then expect an automatic decline. 3.

Candy-Colored Congo Sees Waking Dreams Verge Into Nightmares | Raw File. Richard Mosse’s three years of photography work in the Congo using discontinued infrared film is haunting, surreal and beautiful, and it’s currently on display at this year’s Venice Biennial and in a book due out this fall under the work’s title, The Enclave. Mosse is increasingly known for bringing the Cold War-era satellite film, Aerochrome, a new popularity.

The false-color infrared satellite film was initially used for aerial reconnaissance, showing healthy foliage as pink and red and thereby highlighting camouflage as blue or purple. Here, it is the medium for on-the-ground images from war zones of the Congo. As with the film’s properties that switch one color for another on the spectrum, viewers may become unsure of what they are looking at, and where it fits in the cultural spectrum. Through his lens, a world of sinister machismo is seen in the hues of prom dresses and flowers. W: Is it possible to say if you find yourself to be more of an artist, or a journalist?
