System Dynamics - Keinze's Blog

Let’s start with Wikipedia: Systems thinking is the process of understanding how things, regarded as systems, influence one another within a whole […] based on the belief that the component parts of a system can best be understood in the context of relationships with each other and with other systems, rather than in isolation. Systems thinking focuses on cyclical rather than linear cause and effect. Here’s a definition from Barry Richmond, who coined the term in 1987: Systems Thinking is the art and science of making reliable inferences about behavior by developing an increasingly deep understanding of underlying structure. Systems thinking uses computer simulation and a variety of diagrams and graphs to model, illustrate, and predict system behavior.

Earlier this week I received the newsletter from the Making Learning Connected MOOC, #CLMOOC, which I’ve been following. This week’s assignment encourages participants to “hack their writing”. In the newsletter these suggestions were offered: In Make Cycle #4 we invite you to “Hack Your Writing.”

We imagine there are multiple entry points for this week’s make cycle. As I read this, I said, “That’s what I’ve been doing since I started writing this blog in 2005. The front page of both major newspapers featured “Violence in Chicago” this week. However, not much has changed. This is a long article. I've hacked Gene's video to copy this graphic, then to create views of each element. In my own graphic, I show this as the analysis stage.
