When did theatrical television begin? Would you believe 1877? On March 29 of that year, someone using the pen name “Electrician” described a device called an “electroscope,” some sort of image-transmission system — some sort of large -image transmission system. “Electrician’s” letter was published in The Sun the next day (the newspaper most famous for its “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” editorial 12½ years later). The thing about eras is that they inevitably end. The thing about eras ending is that it inevitably sucks when they do. For the past 14 years, we have been providing our community with tech news and downloads, reviews and tutorials. Through these 14 years, largely due to the expertise and contacts acquired in our news publishing adventures, we were fortunate enough to branch out into several exciting new fields.

Someone posted a video of me to Facebook & I couldn't figure out how to extract the video file to save to my hard drive, so I found ChromeCacheView. It's clunky & you still have to do a bit of hunting to find the files but using this program & a bit of ingenuity, I was able to find & save the video for future posterity. An RSS aggregator that's fairly lightweight (though the database can get huge if you have a lot of feeds in it). If you prefer an offline reader, Feedreader is probbaly the way to go. I was able to browse thousands (yes, thousands) of job ads a day using Feedreader to quickly scan the headline & just look at the ones that were most intersting to me. It's a bit of a resource hog, but I've yet to find another feedreader that matches my needs so closely.

This weekend's hot movie debut, "The Hunger Games," has all the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster--an A-list cast and a proven storyline. It's based on a best-selling book series in which the heroine has to fight to the death to provide food for her community. But what it also has going for it is innovative promotion and publicity, through social Web sites like Facebook and Twitter. The more we play with the Apple TV, and the more Apple updates it with new features and new software, the more we like it. But the problem is that unless you've got at least one Mac or iOS device, it's simply not something you'd want to buy. This latest version is a perfect example of that. New 1080p features and a new interface will be enough to attract Apple fans, but for anyone else there are simply better, cheaper options out there. Still though, we've enjoyed our time with it and it's been fun to test it alongside some of Panasonic and Sharp's 2012 TVs this week.

I will repeat what it says above: The Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas is awesome! This is the first time I’ve stayed at a hotel in Las Vegas that doesn’t have a casino in the lobby — and I love it! It doesn’t have that telltale stink of chain-smoking pensioners, the hair oil of [...] I’ve got to get on a plane to Las Vegas soon — always a bunch of fun when under the influence of a stupid head cold.

A Texas-based Linux admin was charged with hacking into the websites of at least 4 police groups after FBI agents engaged him in an online manhunt that mined photo metadata, Facebook profiles, and other digital evidence. He says he's surrendered all accounts in his control, but his status as a cooperating witness is anything but clear.
