Query Language. xPad. The Ultimate Notepad. Tofu. Tofu is a novel application to address the common problem that people don't like reading text on the screen. Why is that anyway? I believe there are two main reasons: line width and visual instability. Text is usually very wide on the screen, which makes going from the end of one line to the beginning of the next difficult.

That's why newspapers have narrow columns: It makes them faster to read. So why not just take a normal window and make it narrower, scrolling down as you need? In Tofu, text is arranged in columns, and each column is only as high as your window. Tofu also includes some other useful features to make reading easier. Tofu 2.0 features PDF support, trackpad scrolling and usability improvements, and is a Universal Binary.Revision 2.0.1 fixes bugs with the Tofu Service, full-screen mode and hyphenation. March 25, 2012 The phone is the new platform – everything is converging onto the “smart phone.” Soon, we’ll use our phones to manage our homes, purchase things, board an airplane, sign a document, get into our office buildings, and much much more. And yet today’s phones basically mimic our desktop computers. Do you really want to open a Word or Excel document on your phone?

The answer to today’s scalability problems is the personal data locker. Thank you. January 15, 2010 It’s early days in the semantic web, and every VC is starting to use the word semantic like it’s the next social networking. It isn’t the next social networking. It’s hard. It requires cooperation. And it’s easy to confuse semantic projects with the semantic web. So let’s clear up the confusion right now. As Dan Connolly says: “The key term in ‘semantic web’ is ‘web’.” Unstructured Silo Push is like most database-driven web sites, where the documents and data are buried in a database, and you must query the database to learn what’s in it.

Unstructured Web Push is like most blogs, articles, PDFs, tables, spreadsheets, podcasts, videos, and other mixed text and data online. Unstructured Silo Pull is a scenario where data lives in a database, has very little structure, but can still be accessed from anywhere, thanks to a unique set of names. Unstructured Web Pull includes documents that can be pulled into other systems right from the web, even though they lack structure. Semantic Wiki: Social Semantic Web in Use. Download Markdown 1.0.1 (18 KB) — 17 Dec 2004 Introduction Markdown is a text-to-HTML conversion tool for web writers.

Markdown allows you to write using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text format, then convert it to structurally valid XHTML (or HTML). Thus, “Markdown” is two things: (1) a plain text formatting syntax; and (2) a software tool, written in Perl, that converts the plain text formatting to HTML. See the Syntax page for details pertaining to Markdown’s formatting syntax.

You can try it out, right now, using the online Dingus. The overriding design goal for Markdown’s formatting syntax is to make it as readable as possible. The best way to get a feel for Markdown’s formatting syntax is simply to look at a Markdown-formatted document. (You can use this ‘.text’ suffix trick to view the Markdown source for the content of each of the pages in this section, e.g. the Syntax and License pages.) Markdown is free software, available under a BSD-style open source license. Movable Type. Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal. Talking Back To Happiness – how voice calls can save 3G | The Register. High performance access to file storage Europe's 3G disaster could be mitigated by getting phone users to spend a little longer each day on the phone talking.

That's the opinion of AT&T Labs researcher says Andrew Odlyzko, author of the justifiably celebrated research paper Content Is Not King. Odlyzko's proposition is simple: historically more money has been spent on point to point communications and connectivity than on content, which in digital terms means email, instant messaging and chat groups, and peer-to-peer personal file sharing. Networks looking to recoup the data services to recoup the costs of 3G licenses are whistling, he says. "3G is a wonderful technology - but there's no business case for it," he says bluntly.

Research firm Jupiter MMXI predicted this week that mobile data revenues would race to 8.1 billion euros ($11 billion) by 2005. "If that's all they're going to get, they're going to face financial ruin," he told us this week. The answer: Talk More? Anyone listening. By Azureus - High Definition Movies and Videos. Content analysis. Content analysis is "a wide and heterogeneous set of manual or computer-assisted techniques for contextualized interpretations of documents produced by communication processes in the strict sense of that phrase (any kind of text, written, iconic, multimedia, etc.) or signification processes (traces and artifacts), having as ultimate goal the production of valid and trustworthy inferences.

"[1] On the other side, Content Analysis can also study traces (documents from past times) and artifacts (non-linguistic documents), which come from communication processes in a broad sense of that phrase - commonly referred to as "signification" in Semiotics (in the absence of an intentional sender, semiosis is developed by abduction).[1] Over the years, content analysis has been applied to a variety of scopes. In recent times, particularly with the advent of mass communication, content analysis has known an increasing use to deeply analyse and understand media content and media logic. Description[edit]

Information Architects Japan » Blog Archive » Web design is 95% typography. By Oliver Reichenstein 95% of the information on the web is written language. It is only logical to say that a web designer should get good training in the main discipline of shaping written information, in other words: Typography. Back in 1969, Emil Ruder, a famous Swiss typographer, wrote on behalf of his contemporary print materials what we could easily say about our contemporary websites: Today we are inundated with such an immense flood of printed matter that the value of the individual work has depreciated, for our harassed contemporaries simply cannot take everything that is printed today.

It is the typographer’s task to divide up and organize and interpret this mass of printed matter in such a way that the reader will have a good chance of finding what is of interest to him. With some imagination (replace print with online) this sounds like the job description of an information designer. Typography has one plain duty before it and that is to convey information in writing. Books. Ellen Lupton: Thinking w/Type.
