All About Chocolate: A Lesson Plan. Objective: I often teach this lesson plan around Valentine's Day to help students understand the process of plants being the source of so many things in our lives.
Many young students are intrigued to discover that the chocolate candy they love to eat starts as a plant. The lesson shows the scientific process of transforming cacoa beans into edible candy or chocolate drinks. Suggested age: 7 and up Materials: Cacoa or cocoa beans can be purchased at health food stores. Cocoa powder, chocolate milk, chocolate bar, M'M's, white chocolate chips, chocolate syrup and Hershey kisses. Lesson activities: Students sit in a circle where they are led in a what do you know session about chocolate. Next, I show them a picture of a cacoa plant growing in South America and I show them a photo of the pods that hold the beans. Background information: The scientifc name for the cacoa tree is Theobroma Cacoa, and were originally grown in Central and South America.
