Rapid Contextual Design, First Edition : A How-to Guide to Key Techniques for User-Centered Design

http://www.amazon.com/Rapid-Contextual-Design-How-User-Centered/dp/0123540518 Karen's process is something that actually works, unlike many psudo-ethnographic customer engagement strategies. By maintaining a connection to the customer data from the beginning to the end, it uniquely empowers you with a defensible design rationale. Something few other approaches can say. A true roadmap for playing nicely with agile development is also something you won't find in most other customer research methodologies, especially contextual ones.
SIMON: How would you tell a stranger right now exactly where you are in the world? What if your life or somebody's life depends on the directions you give? When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, search and rescue teams discovered that they lacked a common language for explaining where they were or where people needed help. There area mapping systems that can make rescue and response easier if Americans are willing to use them.

Story

It's hidden somewhere in his office, among the leaning towers of books, academic reprints, old newspapers, and empty Diet Sprite cans. He ducks and whirls his head around until he spots it on a bookshelf, right next to a copy of the programming linguistics textbook he cowrote, and gives a satisfied smile. But as he fiddles with the pipe, twisting it around and tapping it against the desk, then looking blankly at a bag of tobacco as if unsure what to do, the smile becomes sheepish.

A visual vocabulary

http://www.amazon.com/Information-Architecture-Blueprints-Christina-Wodtke/dp/0735712506 While well written and entertaining, the author fails in this book to present a volume with any real depth. If one is in search of a book that explains information architecture and provides some really good guidelines, this is, however, such a book. The reader is directed to carefully plan the Web site, to commit it to paper first and to do a prototype which should then be shown to others for their input as users.

Book: Information Architecture: Blueprints for the Web

http://www.amazon.com/Mapping-Websites-Digital-Media-Design/dp/2880464641 If you're looking for a book that can give you insight on how to structure and organize a web site, or any other screen based application for that matter (wireless, desktop, etc.), keep looking because this is not it. If you already have a good idea of how you want to organize your website and want to take it to the next level, you need a map that can sequence and structure your ideas in a visual format. Its is one of the best ways to gain insight into the overall user experience, help you optimize your architecture and share it with others (no web skills necessary). This book is a great tool when it comes to looking at examples that illustrate the best mapping alternative for your particular project.

Book: Practical Information Architecture

I've worked with web development for some time now, and having read the previous review, I hesitated to buy this book. Now I'm glad I did! Reiss writes like a dream and makes this important subject accessable to everyone - not just a few seasoned pros. Yes, we've heard most of this before, but never so clearly, and Reiss' shares his experience on several subjects (such as personalization and audience segmentation) that most of us have never had to deal with personally. http://www.amazon.com/Practical-Information-Architecture-Structuring-Successful/dp/0201725908

Web prototyping with Powerpoint

By Geoff Hart, Associate Fellow, Montreal Chapter and Simon Riffou (graphic designer, Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada) January 2006 Traditional storyboarding techniques work quite well for primarily linear presentations such as videos. Because these techniques work so well, it's tempting to extend them to cover user interfaces and multimedia presentations. http://www.stcsig.org/id/id_articles/0601_interactive_prototypes.htm

Prototyping with Powerpoint

Although this article does focus on Microsoft PowerPoint, most of it equally applies to other presentation programs like the presentation module of the openoffice suite. Why use PowerPoint for prototyping? Personally I used a range of tools to create a prototype: Photoshop, Dreamweaver (HTML), Internet Explorer (HTML+ javascript) and Delphi. The all have their pros and cons. First we want to create a master slide that contains the parts we want to appear on every slide. If we are prototyping a website we may want to use the image of an empty browser as the background. http://www.jansfreeware.com/articles/misc-prototyping.html

User Experience Poster

This "Designing the User Experience" poster illustrates the path to more usable products. Starting from the beginning with defining the users and their requirements to the conclusion with usability testing, a complete user-centered design process is laid out, using a game board metaphor with "ladders" to help you jump ahead, and "chutes" for places where a good process was not followed.

Un-Official London Tube Maps

Prior to March 2006 Geofftech.co.uk has been up on the internet since 1999, and had tube related content on it almost immediately with a quiz about station names. It really grew though in 2002 onwards when I put up a page about the attempt I was going to make on getting the World Record for travelling around the system in the fastest time possible. Over time the pages grew and I added more and more content to the site.
