DbhsF. Wanted: Radical Collaborations to Re-enchant Education. How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. This insight from Anne Frank is evidenced today all across the world in education and many other domains. People are doing amazing things. Start ups, reforms, revolutions. It's good news. It’s happening everywhere. And it all fits together, whether we see the connections today or not.

Pointillism. If you’re not feeling it, if you’re wondering if you’re a part of education’s big picture...we’re thinking, more than anything, you need to know that you are - assuming you love what you’re doing/teaching/learning. Cathy Davidson has a very upbeat and positive take on this, she says here: ...it’s not the future. Cathy goes on to say: The sociologists tell us that the cohort of students entering college this year are the least alienated, most family- and socially conscious, most politically engaged, friendliest, least drug- and alcohol-addicted, and least violent generation since World War II. Tim DeChristopher. Tim DeChristopher is an American climate activist and co-founder of the environmental group Peaceful Uprising. On December 19, 2008 he protested a Bureau of Land Management oil and gas lease auction of 116 parcels of public land in Utah's redrock country by successfully bidding on 14 parcels of land (totaling 22,500 acres) for $1.8 million with no intention to pay for them.[2] DeChristopher was removed from the auction by federal agents, taken into custody, and questioned.

DeChristopher served 21 months in prison, from July 2011[3] through April 2013.[4] Saying they had been rushed into auction with insufficient environmental and scientific review, the United States Department of the Interior canceled many of the leases shortly after the auction and a subsequent court injunction.[5] Early life[edit] Activism[edit] As an avid reader, DeChristopher developed an interest in the writers and philosophies that have shaped U.S. and global social movements. Shark “Massacres” Happen Every Day…We Just Don’t Hear About It | Conservation International Blog. Earlier this week, MSNBC reported a shark “massacre” in which hundreds of sharks were found dead aboard a fishing vessel captured while fishing illegally in the Galápagos Marine Reserve. Scott Henderson, director of CI’s Eastern Tropical Pacific Seascape program and shark expert, responds.

Photo: © Fred Bavendam/ Minden Pictures In the 30 years since I first arrived on the Galápagos Islands as a wide-eyed biology student, I have seen plenty to keep my eyes popping. I’ve witnessed some of nature’s most impressive wildlife spectacles — vast schools of hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini), grand aggregations of Galápagos sharks (Carcharhinus galapagensis) and even ‘mini-schools’ of the ocean’s biggest fish, the colossal whale shark (Rhincodon typus). I’ve also had the unfortunate experience of watching shark populations decline, mostly due to overfishing and illegal fishing in protected areas. Which is why news of last week’s “shark massacre” has come as such an unsettling surprise. The Global Education Collaborative - The Official Social Network of the Global Education Conference.

Leon Botstein will conduct the landmark production of Richard Strauss's opera Die Liebe der Danae opening Bard Music Festival July 29 (photo courtesy of Bard College) If music be the food of educational excellence, play on Maestro Botstein. Give me excess of Richard Strauss's Die Liebe der Danae at Bard Summerscape 2011. That strain again Maestro, it had a dying fall. It came o'er my ear like the sweet sound of newly arriving Bard freshman eager to experience this spectacular operatic production (comedy, romance and drama set against Strauss's brilliant orchestral score), whilst relishing other rich works of literature and honing their writing skills in this, their first fantastical college orientation.

UN to declare famine in parts of drought-hit Somalia. 20 July 2011 Last updated at 16:18 GMT An estimated 10 million people have been affected by the drought in east Africa The United Nations has declared a famine in two areas of southern Somalia as the region suffers the worst drought in more than half a century.

The UN said the humanitarian situation in southern Bakool and Lower Shabelle had deteriorated rapidly. It is the first time that the country has seen famine in 19 years. Meanwhile, the UN and US have said aid agencies need further safety guarantees from armed groups in Somalia to allow staff to reach those in need. Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-affiliated group which controls large swathes of south and central Somalia, had imposed a ban on foreign aid agencies in its territories in 2009, but has recently allowed limited access.

News Stories, 2 August 2011 © UNHCR/B.Bannon It's early in the morning and recently arrived refugees wait in the shade outside the Dagahaley reception centre. DAGAHALEY REFUGEE CAMP, Kenya, August 2 (UNHCR) – Abdulahi Haji Hassan gazes at the exhausted and confused faces of his family and contemplates the toll that drought and famine has taken on their lives.

His two-year-old son, Madey, leans listlessly against his mother's breast. Fama, Abdulahi's four-year-old daughter, is covered in dust from the 27-day trek through the howling desert from their home near Baidoa in southern Somalia to the Kenyan border. Walking towards asylum was not a matter of choice. When the last cow died, everyone knew that the children would be next.

The Hassan family is among the 1,300 refugees who arrive daily from Somalia to the camps around Dadaab in north-east Kenya, including Dagahaley. Somalia: ‘Disaster fatigue’ must not dull compassion for starving children – UN.

19 August 2011 – The head of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) today made an impassioned appeal to the world to save an estimated 390,000 starving children in famine-ravaged regions of Somalia, saying the international community must not let the so-called “disaster fatigue” numb compassion and generosity. “I have read in the last few days a number of articles noting a decrease of interest in the Horn of Africa in the press and in the publics. This must not happen. We cannot let a kind of disaster fatigue set in,” said Anthony Lake, the UNICEF Executive Director, at a news conference at UN Headquarters to mark World Humanitarian Day. “The statistics can be mind-numbing, but remember that the data is sons and daughters.

The statistics are little boys and little girls, every one of them,” said Mr. Lake, adding that the situation in Somalia was a “human disaster becoming a human catastrophe.” “That is wrong. “The crisis will get worse,” said Mr. “We are in a fight against time. Tomorrow morning, I’ll make a presentation at 7:30 in the morning to get our district technology camp started. My topic is “Building your Professional Learning Network,” and will focus on how professionals can use social media to enhance their skills. As I prepared, I thought a lot about my audience, some dedicated educators from our schools who are facing the constant challenge of doing more with less. My job is to convince those gathered that it is worth their valuable time to create their own digital footprint. After some reflection, here’s my 6 point argument: Twitter and blogs connect you with smart people from around the world. Thinking about my own PLN, there are classroom teachers, administrators, college professors, consultants, and others connected to education that have ideas that allow me to learn more.

Twitter and blogs are always available. My schedule, like everyone else in our profession, is rather hectic. Whatever your passion, there is someone out there to learn with. Social Enterprise Spotlight: For Non-Profits & Foundations, The Times Are A Changin'
