One of the benefits reaped by the impact of the theonomist movement is a renewal of the serious study of the Old Testament law. As a consequence of the pervasive spirit of antinomianism that has infected contemporary evangelicalism, the law of God has been treated with woeful neglect. In their zeal to recover the importance of divine law, the theonomists have produced significant scholarly expositions of the Old Testament law. In his huge volume Tools of Dominion, Gary North provides a masterful exposition of many of the laws of the Old Testament that appear arcane to the modern reader. If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. On the surface this text appears to justify a practice that is blatantly cruel, harsh, and severe. North explains the text in terms of the practice of indentured servanthood and the Jewish practice of exacting a “bride price” from a groom.
The second way of escape from bondage was through the bride-redemption system. Ligonier. “This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband” (Eph. 5:32–33). - Ephesians 5:22-33 Godly marriages are a beautiful thing to behold, and they point to something far greater than the bond between husband and wife. As Paul tells us in today’s passage, the intimacy and mutual self-giving love of married life wonderfully symbolizes and points to the relationship between Christ and His church. Much can be said about this text on the husband’s love for his wife and the wife’s submission to her husband. The analogy between marriage and Christ’s relation to His church has limitations, for no husband in this fallen world loves his wife perfectly, and no wife submits as she ought in every circumstance.
Jerome, one of the most significant early church fathers, writes, “Nothing is greater than Christ and the church. Coram Deo. Ligonier. My husband and I recently celebrated our second wedding anniversary. In the five years that I have known him we have learned, and will continue to learn, a great deal about love. My husband takes the meaning of love so seriously that he waited until the day he proposed to profess his love to me. That is a day I will never forget, and it was made even more special because he had saved those words just for me.
Two years ago we pledged to love one another as long as we both shall live. Many couples recite these vows but drastically misunderstand the meaning, and they are often sadly disillusioned. First John 3:17 states, “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?” The world tells us that love is a feeling, something that comes and goes. Love is an action, not an emotion or feeling. Ligonier. The sanctity of marriage is being threatened, and all people likely suspect it. Everyone knows divorce rates are shamefully high, and same-sex unions are being legalized on a global scale. To help protect marriage, some are fighting in civil courts, some are writing books, some are preaching, some are teaching, and the list goes on. Whether it is working is up for debate. Not up for debate is God’s purpose for marriage — to glorify Him (see 1 Cor. 10:31).
This purpose for marriage is also where we find our best weapon to protect it. God must be first in marriage for it to be lived to His glory. To put God first in our marriages, we must recognize its place. May we be humbled by Christ’s example and make every effort to live it. Ligonier. What if you had an angel involved in the arrangement of your marriage or your children’s marriage, wouldn’t that be amazing? If you’re a believer, you actually do; the “Angel of the Lord” Himself. In Genesis 24, Abraham, in his advanced age, commissions his servant to find a suitable wife for Isaac, his son.
Abraham’s desire is undergirded by God’s design. An angel accompanies Abraham’s servant as he seeks out and, ultimately, finds Rebekah. This kind of superintendence is not reserved for prophets; it is how God perpetuates His promises and His people. God’s promise to Abraham was not in vain. This account teaches us about God’s mighty providence over all human circumstances — our lineages, our births, our lives, our families — all for His glory.God has gone to radical lengths to make covenant with His people and to make them into a family. Isaac had been a good son to his parents, and it followed that he was a good husband to Rebekah.
Ligonier. I confess the Song of Solomon has always intimidated me as a preacher. Its vivid and excitable statements of marital sexual intimacy and the penchant of commentators to interpret it allegorically have combined to make me cautious. Even the ancients recommended that a young man not read the Song of Songs until he was either married or age 30. Yet, “all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable…” (2 Tim. 3:16). The Song of Songs is presented as a dramatic narrative that includes Solomon’s bride, the never-named Shulammite, secondly Solomon, thirdly, the daughters of Jerusalem, and fourthly, the brothers of the Shulammite. It could be the Shulammite is Naamah the Ammonite, Solomon’s first wife; the mother of Rehoboam (1 Kings 14:21) who was born one year before Solomon became king, which probably occurred around age 20. Thus she would be his first love. First, this book celebrates marital, sexual intimacy enjoyed as God’s good gift.
Third, the Song of Songs is countercultural. Ligonier. “And to forsake all others, till death do us part.” One would think, that with the decades-old trend in the broader culture of “personal marriage vows,” wherein husband and wife fill in the blanks and speak their own words, that the above would be the first to be ditched. It’s not so much the language as the sentiment that is archaic. Competing mathematical theories, combined with actual divorces tell us that between one third and one half of all marriages end in divorce. Strangely enough, most couples still triumphantly march away from the altar having vowed life-long fidelity. That illusion is so powerful, however, that in the face of the statistics, it might better be called a delusion.
The answer within the church is simple enough. Once we grasp that we are His bride and that He will never let us go, we begin to loosen our grip on that cultural picture of perseverance, a white knuckled grip. We do not have then merely a handsome groom dressed up for the crowd. Ligonier. Liberals have a way of renaming things in order to make them acceptable. When former-President Clinton committed adultery he called it a “mistake.” Of course, it was sin. Everyone knows that the words “choice” and “fetus” have been used to justify murder.
Recently, politically correct wordsmiths have coined the phrase “same-sex marriage.” From a biblical perspective, however, a proper name for this activity, is “legalized homosexuality.” Regardless of the attempt of two same-sex partners to justify “marrying” by declaring in a ceremony that they will be faithful to one another, God will neither condone nor accept their acts — even if the state eventually does. And, as other articles in this edition of Tabletalk will make clear, homosexuality and lesbianism are not “natural” (Rom. 1:6, 27). It is not as though Christians demean or oppose sexual activity. Marriage has many purposes, only one of which is procreation. Men and women were designed to become “one flesh” (Gen. 2: 24). Patience is Still a Virtue. » Hexayurt Stuff Some Dude Does. From Math2033 Asa King Rachel Myers Michael Hall Autumn Lewis David Church The hexayurt was invented in 2002 by Vinay Gupta. Below is a plan for a basic hexayurt: How did our group go about constructing a hexayurt? First Step: With help from Columbia Forest Products, who donated 4 x 8 feet sections of plywood, we assembled our materials. These included: - Twelve 4 x 8 feet sections of plywood - 2 inch wood screws - 2 x 2 inch boards of wood We also used: - Saw - Hammers - Drill Second Step: We teamed up together one Saturday morning and began construction! Third Step: We cut 6 pieces of the 4 x 8 ft. sections of plywood diagonally. Fourth Step: Taking the remaining 6 pieces of plywood, we cut 6 inches off of each section. Fifth Step: We took 1 piece of the plywood section that we would use for the wall of the hexyurt, which was now a 4 x 7.5 ft. section, and measured two feet inward from the length on both sides.
Eighth Step: Using the screws and the drill, we put up the walls with our connectors. File:Thermosiphon Solar Shower1.png. Yurt / Ger Notes. The height h is 140-180cm, or even 200cm, smaller yurts (e.g. 3-4m) are lower, e.g. 6m often is 1.60 or more. The height is so low because the resulting room is better to heat, but for reason of comfort you may choose to have it your head height high.
Traditional yurt development comes from a given w khana-spacing and length of a khana-section, and then the amount of poles is calculated, e.g. 2-3 khana sections, or 4-6 khana sections for large yurt, then the poles are counted. I have prefered to define the yurt from the amount of poles for reasons of angle measurement and symmetry (e.g. multiple of 4 poles), to increase or decrease npoles in order to make and see how large the spacing of w gets.
The resulting w should be between 20-35cm in order to create a stable wall / khana, good stable laths may allow larger spacings of w. Usually the roof poles lie on each lath junctions, which is arranged as crossed lattice. The Yurt Foundation. Nearodesic_TriDome_Report. Welcome to White Mountain Yurts.
