Whether it’s people questioning the efficacy of turning a personal device into a shared tool, the complex ethical dilemmas Foxconn presents us with, or the sheer consumerism and corporate lust that the words ‘iPad rollout’ imbue, the critics are many and mostly intelligent. As someone who has been lucky enough to use iPad devices with students since pretty much their release, I feel the need to briefly address and delicately admonish those that express perhaps the greatest criticism of iPad use in classrooms: it’s a consumption, not a creation, tool (you never hear this criticism of books). After using the first generation of iPad with students for a year, I agreed with this point.

Like every teacher all over the world, I’m a busy fellow. The time I can spend tweeting and checking my tweets is very finite. I’m torn though because tweeting with other educators is something that I love to do. It is simply the best staff room in the world with professionals all doing the best they can by the children in their classrooms.

At the beginning of last year, Apple added iPad gesture controls in iOS 4.3 as a developer option. And with the debut of iOS 5 in October of last year, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) made these multi-finger gestures official. Since then, however, I really haven’t seen the company promote this functionality the way it does for its laptop trackpads.

Inspire Free is a pared down version of the full app, but only slightly. It still uses the same, realistic brush stroke features and unlimited color variations that made it famous. However, instead of five different paintbrushes, it comes with three. Unlike the full version, the brushes cannot be used for erasing, but strokes can be removed with the “undo” feature up to 10 times.
