Virginia Sanchez Korrol The Great Migration at Mid-Century Following the Second World War, the number of Puerto Ricans in the United States escalated from 69,967 individuals in the decade of the 1940s to 887,662 in the 1960s.

THE STORY OF U.S. PUERTO RICANS - PART FOUR

Over 4,200 individuals were estimated to have arrived in the United States each year in the period between 1946 and 1956, 85 percent of whom would settle in New York City. U.S. Puerto Ricans appeared in the census records of every state in the union, with visible concentrations forming in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Massachusetts, California and Florida. It was in the 50s and 60s, however, that New York became strongly identified with the group designated in research literature as an airborne migration of American citizens and as stereotypical outsiders in popular culture.

An additional 20,000 contract farm laborers rounded out the migrant flow throughout the 50s and 60s.

Genographic Project DNA Results Reveal Details of Puerto Rican History

Tainos, the largest indigenous Caribbean population, were living a life based on the cultivation of root crops and fishing when upon the shores arrived Columbus and his fleet, having crossed the Atlantic Ocean for the second time in as many years. At that point in time everything changed. What’s written on paper has told us much about what happened next. What’s written in the DNA of today’s Puerto Ricans can tell us some more. National Geographic’s Genographic Project researches locations where different groups historically intermixed to create a modern day melting pot.

Our Genographic team learned some key pieces of information that helped us gain more insight into the peopling of the Caribbean. The average Puerto Rican individual carries 12% Native American, 65% West Eurasian (Mediterranean, Northern European and/or Middle Eastern) and 20% Sub-Saharan African DNA. The Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Ford Foundations Developing Knowledge for the Developing World By: Andrew Gavin Marshall. The Rockefeller Foundation’s Hand in Hobby Lobby. The Supreme Court’s reasoning and decision in Hobby Lobby should make the foundation reflect on the relative wisdom of its initiative to blend the nonprofit and for-profit sectors. Americans either have hailed the US Supreme Court’s decision on the Hobby Lobby case this summer as a victory for religious freedom, or criticized it as a regression in women’s health and reproductive rights.

The court ruled that the Department of Health and Human Services regulations imposing the contraceptive mandate on for-profit, “closely held” corporations violated the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993. The court reasoned that these for-profit corporations, like religious nonprofits, could exercise religion and refuse contraceptive coverage for their female employees in the process.
