Harvesting the world.

How Geography is Used to Study Agriculture - Geolounge. Many geographic factors affect today’s modern agricultural businesses and trade. From climate to key trade and shipping hubs, location has shaped the fortunes of states and agricultural production. For farmers, timing is critical in the obtainment of resources, such as fertilizer and seed, but also forecasting likely weather in the coming season, informing on how much irrigation is needed as well as temperatures that can affect crop growth.[1] The state, however, has emerged as one of the more dominant or significant actors in shaping agricultural land found within countries; regions within states are often subject to investment and policies such as pollution control.

For countries and regions where agriculture has formed a greater focus for the local economy, greater environmental damage has been evident. Food, though, is delivering a modest ray of hope.

Across Puerto Rico, in fact, there's a new wave of interest in food and farming. According to Ricardo Fernandez, who is CEO of Puerto Rico Farm Credit, the largest agricultural lender on the island, it's a dramatic break from Puerto Rico's past. "Historically, agriculture has had a stigma in Puerto Rico," he says. It's astonishing, in fact, just how far farming in Puerto Rico has fallen over the past half-century.

During a recent trip to Puerto Rico, I heard many different reasons for Puerto Rico's dependence on imported food. Use of GIS in Agriculture ~ GIS Lounge. Droughts, floods, swarms of insects and poor farming techniques have plagued the agricultural community for centuries. Improvements have been made to insure the safety and gain of crops worldwide and yet these factors and many more continue to make or break individuals and communities affected by them. Geographic Information Systems are incredibly helpful in being able to map and project current and future fluctuations in precipitation, temperature, crop output, and more. By mapping geographic and geologic features of current (and potential) farmland scientists and farmers can work together to create more effective and efficient farming techniques; this could increase food production in parts of the world that are struggling to produce enough for the people around them.

GIS can analyze soil data combined with historical farming practices to determine what are the best crops to plant, where they should go, and how to maintain soil nutrition levels to best benefit the plants.
