Creating an Authentic Maker Education Rubric. While many teachers are excited about the maker movement and may even be creating projects for their classrooms, assessment can be puzzling even to veteran classroom teachers.
How can teachers prove that deep, rich learning is occurring through making? How do we justify a grade to students and parents alike, especially to the student who "just isn’t good at art"? By crafting a three-part rubric that assesses process, understanding, and product, teachers can rest assured that they are covering all the bases. Part 1: Process The process of making in the classroom needs to be incorporated in the final grade. I also spent 5 years as a technology workshop instructor. In 2013, I started using library centers for grades 3-5 as I teach on a semi-fixed library schedule. Currently, I use a blend of mini lessons and constructivism with time for students to work in class and have some choices in their learning. When I was brainstorming with Shelley Olin, 5th grade social studies teacher, we began to wonder about connections these standards had to makerspace. It started as an idea seed and grew into a set of experiences for all 5th graders to engage in. I wanted students to put themselves into the shoes of an inventor so that they could begin to understand the perseverance and curiosity that inventors have. We focused on 3 of the inventors: Thomas Edison (electricity), Alexander Graham Bell (communication), and the Wright Brothers (flight). I prepared 3 centers on electricity, communication, and flight. For flight, I selected some paper airplanes that could be made from a full sheet of paper.
