Inside Apple's secret plan to kill the cash register - wireless networking, wireless, networking, Mobile Apps and Services, Mobile and Wireless, Macintosh, internet, Financial IT, e-commerce, e-business, Apple. Computerworld - If you've ever been to a store, you know the drill: Browse the merchandise, pick something, carry it to the checkout counter, maybe wait in line, pay, then walk out with your purchases and a receipt.

Whether it's a clothing store, a grocery store or a coffee shop, you're likely to find a big counter with a cash register on it, and a person operating that cash register on the other side. You go to them; they don't come to you. Why? An American saloon owner named James Ritty invented the cash register in 1879. Since then, all cash registers have shared the characteristics of bigness, heaviness and bulkiness -- and have required the old walk-up-to-the-counter behavior in order to buy things. One notable exception is your local Apple Store. Apple, apparently, thinks the whole process for buying things in retail stores is dumb. And it has a point. So why would Apple's hotly anticipated iWallet system require a cash register?

It won't, if one analyst has it right. Ten One Design Pogo Sketch Pro stylus for iPad review. The Ten One Design Pogo SketchPro stylus is a fantastic all-around style, with all around best in-class performance Ten One Design Pogo Sketch Pro, part of the Pogo Sketch line up of stylus pens, is one of the best we've had the pleasure use with the iPad. It's not as cheap or as specialized as some of the competition, however, so does the quality make up for it?

Unlike some other iPad stylus pens, the Pogo Sketch Pro doesn't look like a traditional pen. It's longer and far more tapered than most. It's got a solid aluminum unibody and an excellent ergonomic grip. This puts the weighting far more forward than most other stylus pens, and that's a good thing. It lets the weight of the tool do a lot of the work for you.

The tip is special designed and patent pending. The Pogo Sketch Pro is available in any color you want, provided that color is black and silver. For note-taking, the Pogo Sketch Pro is very good. LOS ANGELES--You can forget about your dreams of an Xbox 360 Portable. That's so 2006. No, at this year's E3, Microsoft did something much more surprising: instead of getting proprietary, it hopped on everyone else's platform instead. Xbox SmartGlass was the touted application, service, technology -- whatever you want to call it -- that stood for a new product at Microsoft's E3 press conference this morning in Los Angeles. It needed some jolt of new produce excitement, arguably, and SmartGlass can stand in as this year's "what is that?

" buzzword, a second-screen concept for turning seemingly any smartphone or tablet into an additional display when watching movies, playing games, or browsing online. It's very unclear what exactly SmartGlass is , or what it will do, other than what was demoed. Chasing hardware is risky. Apple has had a huge impact on mobile gaming . Doing that may not be quite so simple. I'm a little skeptical.

Sources in the industry speaking with DigiTimes (via AppleInsider) have reportedly been expecting the competition in the smartphone world to heat up around the adoption of quad-core processors as early as this year's holiday quarter.

HTC, Samsung, LG, and China's Meizu already have quad-core processors in their phones, leading industry sources to believe that indeed, Apple will have to include a new chip to stay competitive. That new iPhone is largely expected to be released this fall. While its competition is mostly using Qualcomm's dual-core technology (quad-core is forthcoming later this year), Apple is expected to use Samsung's Exynos 4 architecture as part of its custom line of chips.

The iPhone 4S currently runs the dual-core A5 (the new iPad runs with the A5X, which includes an upgraded graphics processor to handle its Retina Display). A quad-core iPhone would likely carry the A6 name. Would the lack of a quad-core processor in Apple's next iPhone be detrimental to Apple's sales? Mobile & Add-ons. Back at Macworld | iWorld 2012, TUAW editor-in-chief Victor Agreda had a chance to talk with the creator of the iBackFlip Somersault (US$89.95). Now that this iPad bag has been in the wild for a time and has gone through a few design revisions, we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to review the Somersault.

Be sure to read through to the end of the post for details on entering to win an iBackFlip Somersault in a TUAW giveaway. Of all of the myriad bags that we receive at the TUAW Labs, I have to say that the iBackFlip Somersault is one of the most unique I've seen. At first glance, it appears to be a sling-type backpack just big enough for an iPad or perhaps a MacBook Air. The real difference shows up when you open the main fold-out pocket on the Somersault. This is the killer feature of the Somersault, and the thing that really makes it stand out in the crowd. That cool little fold-out "desk" panel isn't the only feature of the iBackFlip Somersault, though.

But it now has an upgraded version for 2010: the Echo. The original Pulse came with the ability to record audio alongside whatever you wrote with it. That audio could then be selectively played back by tapping the pen on whichever words you're interested in -- thanks to a microscopic pattern of dots on specially-printed paper, the pen knew what was being recorded at the moment each word was written.

It's a nifty idea, but as the community of users grew, so too did the list of complaints about the product. "They wanted the pen to stop rolling around on the desk, for one thing. So Marggraff worked down the laundry list of demands, sprinkled in some ideas that he'd had too, and created a new product. There's a smaller rubberised grip with one flat side, a microUSB charging socket, an audio jack, and considerably bulked up storage from 2GB to 8GB. Rumor has it that Apple is quietly tinkering with a new device dedicated to making gaming easier on iOS devices.

During their 2012 iPad review, AnandTech mentioned: I know of an internal Apple project to bring a physical controller to market, but whether or not it will ever see the light of day remains to be seen. As smartphones and tablets come close to equalling the performance of current game consoles, I feel like the controller problem must be addressed.

The best third-party attempt at hardware remotes dedicated to mobile that I've seen to date is Zeemote. but if Apple ends up providing native Bluetooth connection support for standard game controllers like the PS3's, it may circumvent the need for Apple to make anything themselves. Personally, I think the Wii remote would be best suited for the job, at least from a style standpoint. Apple is most definitely targeting gaming consoles with the new iPad, so the possibility isn't too far-out. Source: AnandTech. FastEddieSRT : Pogo Sketch Pro vs. Kuel H... " to stylus pens but users are saying "yes! " in ever greater number. Apple might have had a point, back in the days before iPhones and iPads, when pointy old resistive stylus pens had to be used just to get outdated touch screens and inscrutable interfaces to work. To answer that questions, iMore took a look at four of the most popular, high end stylus pens on the market -- The Ten One Design Pogo Sketch Pro, the SGP Kuel H12, the Adonit Jot Pro, and the Wacom Bamboo. Vineet Madan, vice-president of McGraw-Hill Higher Education eLabs, spends time developing ways that technology can improve learning among college and university students. He recently talked about the reasons why iPads are ready for the college classroom. K-12 schools across the country (and just down the street) are putting huge chunks of cash aside for 1-to-1 iPad initiatives. Madan argues that iPads are tailor-made for the university level. But are they really ready for K-12? I think they are. iPads Are the Best Way to Show Textbooks iPads are capable of displaying incredible ebooks featuring images, video and audio.

Apple adding photo sharing and social features to iCloud, report says. Apple will soon unveil an update to its iCloud storage service that will add photo sharing and social features, the Wall Street Journal reports. While Dropbox, Box, Microsoft, and Google have dominated the cloud storage conversation in recent months, Apple has mostly stayed out of comparisons because it offers the dumbest (maybe “easiest” is the right word) cloud storage.

It syncs your media across all iOS devices (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad), Macs, and PCs, but there is no way to manage what exactly goes where. But with new functionality that is Apple is likely to announce at its WWDC conference on June 11, iCloud could take a leap forward with more fleshed-out features. First up will be easy photo sharing so others can access and download your photos. The iCloud update will also reportedly let you sync notes and reminders using new web apps. Let us know in the comments if you use iCloud now and if you’re looking forward to new features from the service. This Site Features Some of Steve Jobs' Best Quotes. Is this the new Apple TV Set?

Rumors about a TV coming from Apple have been around for a while already. Never any clear facts, yet the rumors also never entirely go away either. Now we are one big step further – what you see here above, apparently is the new Apple HDTV. According to a source of Cult of Mac, “the Apple HDTV looks like Apple’s current lineup of LED-backlit Cinema Displays but is “much bigger.” It has a built-in iSight camera for making free FaceTime video conference calls. And it has Siri, the iPhone 4S’s voice-activated virtual assistant.” According to those sources, the above mock-up was produced. If this is all true, then an official introduction of Apple television sets this year, would not come as a surprise.

“They will not be anything exotic like OLED or 4K resolution. A further look follows after the jump. BoxWave EverTouch Capacitive Stylus Review.
