Football Helmet to Diagnose If a Player Has Suffered a Concussion

Hashem Ashrafiuon, a mechanical engineering professor in Villanova University’s College of Engineering, envisions a day not too far off, when a computer chip embedded in an American football player’s helmet will transmit brain wave data for instant analysis by software that he and his research team are currently developing for coaches and trainers on the sidelines enabling them to determine if a player has suffered a concussion.

BCILab™ software, developed by Dr. Ashrafiuon and his colleagues from University of Wisconsin and Brain Computer Interface LLC, analyzes human brain wave data (EEG signals) recorded by a headset and predicts abnormalities in brain activity. BCI is currently gathering and analyzing data with scientific collaborators who are subject matter experts in the following verticals, where MindScope™ technology has clear application: “It can basically be used to diagnose any “health problem” that affects brain activity,” Ashrafiuon said. His coach suspects he has sustained a concussion, so he's taken to the hospital. What follows is a battery of tests and physical exam -- culminating in a doctor's diagnosis of a likely concussion. Now, a new study suggests that a novel imaging technique may cut this process down to a single scan which could definitively tell whether a patient is suffering from a concussion or not. This technology, known as diffuse tensor imaging (DTI), may help detect concussions after a traumatic brain injury, since approaches like computed tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) fail to demonstrate evidence of brain abnormalities.

Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York compared 34 patients who sustained concussions with 30 healthy controls, looking for abnormalities across the entire brain of individual patients. Clinical applications, as well as the core hardware and software technology are rapidly evolving and expanding as a result of these relationships. NeuroSky is one of the world's leaders in advanced mobile EEG technology. Neurosky's hardware utilizes patented dry-active sensor technology to read brain signals without conductive gel and without using many electrodes. NeuroSky's EEG hardware technology is very low cost, easy to use and provides excellent functionality. Its technology senses analog electrical brainwaves and processes them into digital signals to make measurements available to power the user-interface of games, computers and medical applications.

Download the code from Extract the file to some folder that is not your EEGLAB folder. Start MATLAB (2008a+ required for the GUI), and reset you path to default settings by clicking File / Set Path / Default, and then Save. If you have misc toolboxes in your path, you run the risk of creating unexpected errors (due to name conflicts), but you can add your directories back later once you know what outputs to expect.

Enter in MATLAB's command line: cd your/path/to/bcilab; bcilab You should now be getting a menu in the upper left corner of the screen. Important notes: The data sets that the practicum slides refer to were only distributed for use in workshops; instead, we now have alternative data sets packaged with the toolbox. You need at least ~2.5gb of free memory to be able to run all tutorials. BCI Application Areas. NASCAR Takes a Huge Step to Protect Drivers’ Health by Implementing Baseline Concussion Testing. Design: This was a prospective, non-randomized study of 396 high school and college football players, including cohorts of 28 athletes with concussion and 28 matched controls. All subjects underwent preseason baseline testing on measures of postconcussive symptoms, postural stability, and cognitive functioning, as well as QEEG. Sports Concussion Testing with Portable EEG. Posted by Christian Elliott - 8th August 2011 A new study published in the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation points to some interesting work being done using portable EEG systems to monitor sports concussions.

Sports Concussion Testing with Portable EEG

The study analyzed results from almost 400 high school and collegiate football players during the 2008-2009 playing season in Milwaukee, WI. A total of 28 players sustained concussions during the playing season, and they were monitored using EEG recording, balance & body control systems, and cognitive testing. The EEG testing used Quantitative EEG (QEEG), a method for creating a visual brain map of electrical activity (see above example). The EEG results showed that abnormal readings in the concussed players continued long after more traditional clinical tests for concussions came back “clean”. And EEG Biofeedback Fact Sheet. Education Pages Quantitative EEG and Neurotherapy Fact Sheet Quantitative EEG is the measurement, using digital technology, of electrical patterns at the surface of the scalp which primarily reflect cortical electrical activity or "brainwaves.
