Non-Terrorist Embarrassment in Boston

To advertise the Cartoon Network show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," the network put up 38 blinking signs (kind of like Lite Brites) around the Boston area. The Boston police decided -- with absolutely no supporting evidence -- that these were bombs and shut down parts of the city. Now the police look stupid, but they're trying really not hard not to act humiliated: Governor Deval Patrick told the Associated Press: "It's a hoax -- and it's not funny. " Unfortunately, it is funny. But it's much easier to blame others than to admit that you were wrong: "It is outrageous, in a post 9/11 world, that a company would use this type of marketing scheme," Mayor Thomas Menino said. Whitehead June 15, 2015 “It is perfectly possible for a man to be out of prison and yet not free—to be under no physical constraint and yet be a psychological captive, compelled to think, feel and act as the representatives of the national state, or of some private interest within the nation wants him to think, feel and act. . . . Oakland, CA — This week, the mayor of Oakland has decided to use an old and unknown law to impose an anti-protest curfew to keep demonstrators off the streets at night.

Free Speech Takes Huge Hit as Oakland Bans Protests at Night, Implements Anti-Protest Curfew

This curfew does not apply to everyone in the city, only those who are involved in organized protests. Mayor Libby Schaaf put the order into effect in the midst of this week’s #SayHerName protest where women and children peacefully protested victims of police brutality. During the demonstration, protesters were prevented from marching to the police station and were threatened with arrest if they stepped off of the sidewalk. Police informed protesters through a giant sound system that their march was not permitted, and that they could be arrested under Vehicle Code Section 2800, which makes it illegal to disobey anything a police officer says. Cat Brooks, one of the organizers of the protest says that their right to freely and peacefully assemble was infringed upon. Peru Minister Says Police Should Use Lethal Force on Protestors

Peruvian Interior Minister Jose Luis Perez Guadalupe said Tuesday that police “can and should” use lethal force in the face of protests like those unfolding in the country against the Tia Maria mine project. “When (police) go to these types of demonstrations, (police) who are on the front line carry non-lethal weapons, but in recognition of their duties and in the name of the protection of the citizenry, police of course can and should use their guns, this is not unusual,” said Perez. Gen. Jorge Flores Goicochea, head of the Peruvian National Police, reiterated the comments made the interior minister, stating that there is a second line of police who are authorized to carry lethal weapons, which can be used “when there is an imminent risk to their lives.”

The official police statement claimed it was an accident, “due to darkness, black clothing, and his low position near the pavement, the officers were unable to see him as they turned the corner.” Police also said parked cars blocked the cop’s visibility as he cruised the street at 15 mph.

And they claimed there was no audio or video evidence in the case. There’s only one problem with the police statement – the evidence has told a completely different story.
