Ecopods: Shipping Container Housing Available Now. Dwight Doerkson has developed "an affordable eco friendly building that’s transportable and doesn’t need to be hooked up to the grid"- out of shipping containers. He cuts out an entire wall and hinges it, so when you want to leave your ecopod you simply flip a switch and a solar powered winch pulls up the deck and closes up the box. The floors are recycled rubber, the walls are FSC birch ply over a bio-based green foam insulation, the optional toilet is composting and fridge is solar powered. From their website: "The eco-pod began its life as a shipping container, hence its sturdy, engineered form and tight weather seal. The imbalance of goods traveling from East to West has created a surplus of these in North America, which means that the purchase price is a fraction of the original manufacturing cost - this saving is then passed on to you, the 'end user'.

The Kunsthaus Graz at night showing the BIX media Façade The Kunsthaus Graz, Grazer Kunsthaus, or Graz Art Museum was built as part of the European Capital of Culture celebrations in 2003 and has since become an architectural landmark in Graz, Austria.

Its exhibition program specializes in contemporary art of the last four decades. Architecture[edit] Its unusual form differs radically from conventional exhibition contexts, many of which maintain the traditions of the modernist "White Cube". The team of architects used an innovative stylistic idiom, known as blob architecture within the historical ambiance of the Murvorstadt. Thus, the gigantic building affectionately called the "Friendly Alien" by its creators Colin Fournier as the Partner-in-Charge together with Peter Cook, in form and material, stands out consciously against the surrounding baroque roof landscape with its red clay roofing tiles but nevertheless integrates the façade of the 1847 iron house.

Anyone with a pile of money can build a big pile of a house, and back in the day, that's what you did. (See, for instance, Downton Abbey.) But during the 20th century, a group of architects staged a controversial revolt. Why, they asked, couldn't less be as impressive as more? Across North America, sensational – but often reasonably-sized and usually deceptively simple – homes stand as their legacy. Here are ten of the best. All of them are open to the public, but make advance reservations.
