Augmented Reality in the Classroom

Since beginning the iPad journey in our school, I have been dying to use some of the Augmented Reality apps available on the iPad. I didn't want to dive in and use it with no substance I wanted to make sure there was real potential to enhance the learning in the classroom. For those people who are not familiar with the term "Augmented Reality," here is a web definition: "Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer. If that is a little too technical, Augmented Reality is a way of using a picture, known as a trigger image, to generate a video, slideshow or computer generated graphic. 3D Game Engine.

AR-media™ Plugin for Google™ SketchUp™

In a very precise sense, through AR-media™ Plugin, SketchUp™ 3D models can be visualized out of the digital workspace directly on users' desktop, by connecting a simple webcam and by printing a suitable code. By means of the Exporting feature, users can create and publish augmented reality files autonomously. Files created by this feature can be visualized on any computer with the freely available AR-media™ Player, without the need of having Trimble SketchUp™ and the Plugin installed.

Users can now create their own SketchUp™ Augmented Reality models and distribute them to their clients as independent, stand-alone files and let their clients experience such models in Augmented Reality in a click. The real world seems a very dull after spending some time at UK Toy Fair. It’s one of the few places where you can see, in the space of a few minutes, the Queen and Prince Phillip playing chess (or lookalikes, anyway), Peppa Pig standing next to Optimus Prime and a 7’ knight riding a child’s scooter. For three days this week, many of the biggest names in toys gathered at Olympia to see, and buy, the latest products the industry has to offer.
