This masterpiece of Renaissance metalwork is signed on the browplate by Filippo Negroli, whose embossed armor was praised by sixteenth-century writers as "miraculous" and deserving "immortal merit." Formed of one plate of steel and patinated to look like bronze, the bowl is raised in high relief with motifs inspired by classical art. The graceful mermaidlike siren forming the helmet's comb holds a grimacing head of Medusa by the hair. The sides of the helmet are covered with acanthus scrolls inhabited by putti, a motif ultimately derived from ancient Roman sculpture and wall paintings.

Pricing for both portrait styles can be seen below, including the new two-color head and shoulder portraits shown above. More examples can be seen in the portraits folder on facebook, or at ClaytonJamesThompson.com . The tradition of having a family portrait painted each year and then using the image for greeting cards is such a fun one! It does require a little advance planning though, to have the portrait several weeks before a holiday in order to get your cards printed and mailed in time. For non-holiday events (weddings, new babies etc.) just make sure to give yourself about two weeks for the painting to be completed, a week to receive it in the mail, a couple weeks to have cards printed if you're doing that, and then a week or two to get them in the mail and out to friends.
