April 18, 2014 The Secrets of Godzilla My artistic career was ended by Godzilla—as a child monster-movie maniac, I stopped attending painting classes when the long-awaited film (the American version, of course, starring Raymond Burr) showed up on Saturday-morning television.

So I take the weeklong run of the Burr-free 1954 Japanese-language original, which begins today at Film Forum, personally. I missed the 2004 screenings of the restoration, so this revival is a welcome chance to catch up with it, and the experience is surprising. The first surprise is that the original version, directed by Ishiro Honda, is not a kids’ movie, not a hectic teen goof, not a grindhouse shocker but a serious drama of politics, romance, and conscience (both civic and intimate). April 17, 2014 A Documentary Set Entirely Within the Capsule of a Cable Car The filmmakers follow the narrow limits of a self-imposed rule, and their obstinacy courts cinematic disaster. An Excerpt from McSweeney’s Next Issue, Josephine Rowe. Illustration: Carson Murdach Do not adjust your set. What you see before you is an excerpt from the latest issue of McSweeney’s, our alluring, laid-back, westerly sister. Curiouser still, the McSweeney’s site has an excerpt from our new interview with Geoff Dyer. Have we gone mad? Yes, because we’re also offering an insane deal: a dual, twenty-percent-off subscription to both our magazines. It’s bonkers—we’re practically burning money. All those mornings, our bodies slicked with a sugary sweat. We were inexhaustible in those final few months, throwing ourselves around every chance we got.

You should think on it, said Stella, who was spending half the week as Lola. That accent. A swan dive, I guess you could call it. Sometimes I want to tell you about this, but I won’t. We pull in silent to the motel, a low, sandy-brick L shape, with all the doors facing onto the car park and the car park mostly empty, mostly dark. When we get to Brisbane, she’s telling us, You won’t even remember. Guernica / A Magazine of Art & Politics. Untitled. Critical-Theory.com. Rattle. The Believer Magazine. The Appendix.
