We built the first version for the British Prime Minister’s office, and now it is used by a variety of British local governments.
When a user wants to make a new petition, they fill in a web form, containing the petition details. During this process, a user must choose when they want their petition to end. The question we are exploring today is this: what’s the best way to ask for that information? From a developer’s point of view, the end of a petition is obviously a date. But we don’t do it like that, for a couple of reasons, both of which you might miss if you were to build this from scratch. For how long would you like your petition to accept signatures? That’s not a date input. So, we ask for a duration and parse the result to turn it into a date when it goes live… but there’s an extra twist. Mysociety/mapit. Layering multiple datasets on top of a map can add noise, but if you extract your layers properly you can keep your map looking really clean. Below is a walk through of how to use a points of interest data layer on top of a larger dataset. I also describe how you can composite multiple map layers directly through the map URL, and how you can add support for high-resolution retina screen devices to ensure your POIs look great across devices.
Labels on Top Adding additional layers can add new dimensions and provide important contextual information to a map. With MapBox.js, you can add multiple layers without sacrificing map speed. With many mapping libraries, each tile url is loaded separately and then placed on the map making the map slow and bloated. The map below shows that is possible to combine many layers (base, population choropleth and labels) all into one tile. Notice how the labels are legible and the speed is not compromised. It’s a transparent monitor that tracks your bare hands through Kinect, then enables you to manually grasp windows and other objects to manipulate them.
That unto itself is pretty neat, but in its latest update, the project has a fantastic new trick. Watch the video closely, and you’ll see that underneath each window a drop shadow is formed. These drop shadows are actually makeshift trackpads, enabling a user to manipulate an object in 3-D space one moment, then rest their hands on the table and scroll around content the next. As the maps on the left show, alcohol drinking habits vary drastically around the world. Such maps, however, need to be regarded with some skepticism. The blue-colored map above supposedly depicts data from 2008, but it appears to be incorrect in several areas.
For example, Belarus and Ukraine are colored as consuming between 5-7 liters of alcohol per capita annually, whereas the multicolored map for 2005 from the 2011 report from the World Health Organization places those two countries in the “12.5 liters and above” category. I doubt that alcohol consumption in Ukraine and Belarus has halved in just 3-5 years. According to the WHO report, global consumption in 2005 amounted to the equivalent of 6.13 liters of pure alcohol per person (aged 15 years or older). The second news is that Google has decided to power down Google Reader. In the last August I released an alpha version of the News app, see my previous post. The app was not stable enough to be shipped today with ownCloud 5 (yes, remember news number one: oC 5 released today!). We are developing the app in the master branch of the ownCloud apps repository on github.
Google Reader is dead. Here’s my paper on evidence and teaching for the education minister. I was asked by Michael Gove (Secretary of State for Education) and the Department for Education to look at how to improve the use of evidence in schools. I think there are huge, positive opportunities for teachers here, that go way beyond just doing a few more trials: there is a need for a coherent “information architecture” that supports evidence based practice. I was asked to write something that explains what this would look like, specifically for teachers.
