Mapbox. Map Maker - Desktop Mapping. Extracting Administrative Boundaries from OpenStreetMap – Part 1 | DIY.mySociety.org. “Clock of the long now (prototype)” by piglicker (CC-BY-NC-ND-licensed from Flickr) One of the democratic software tools mySociety has built is an online petitions tool for use by governments. We built the first version for the British Prime Minister’s office, and now it is used by a variety of British local governments.

When a user wants to make a new petition, they fill in a web form, containing the petition details. During this process, a user must choose when they want their petition to end. The question we are exploring today is this: what’s the best way to ask for that information? From a developer’s point of view, the end of a petition is obviously a date. But we don’t do it like that, for a couple of reasons, both of which you might miss if you were to build this from scratch. For how long would you like your petition to accept signatures? That’s not a date input. So, we ask for a duration and parse the result to turn it into a date when it goes live… but there’s an extra twist. Mysociety/mapit. Points of Interest Layering Techniques for MapBox.

Layering multiple datasets on top of a map can add noise, but if you extract your layers properly you can keep your map looking really clean. Below is a walk through of how to use a points of interest data layer on top of a larger dataset. I also describe how you can composite multiple map layers directly through the map URL, and how you can add support for high-resolution retina screen devices to ensure your POIs look great across devices.

Labels on Top Adding additional layers can add new dimensions and provide important contextual information to a map. With MapBox.js, you can add multiple layers without sacrificing map speed. With many mapping libraries, each tile url is loaded separately and then placed on the map making the map slow and bloated. The map below shows that is possible to combine many layers (base, population choropleth and labels) all into one tile. Notice how the labels are legible and the speed is not compromised. Today starts a one-week period of free subscriptions. Head over to Le Monde, sign up and get a look at the new maps yourself. Front page of new Le Monde paid section features a new French MapBox Streets Reading news on the new Le Monde map MapBox Streets in French, powered by OpenStreetMap Le Monde wanted to offer its news on a map familiar to its readers, so instead of English or local names, French names should be used for countries, cities, oceans and major landmarks. We sourced, reviewed and rolled out French labels in only two months, a time frame that would not have been possible without OpenStreetMap. Print Composer 2.0 – Take #1. Print Composer 2.0 – Take #2. After yesterday’s first post on guide lines & snapping for user-friendly map element arrangement, we’ll have a look at another great new addition: Multi-column legends In the panel on the right, there is a new section called “Columns”.

Here we can create multi-column legend layouts by specifying the desired number of columns. Add some spacing too. By default, Print Composer tries to keep all classes of one layer in one column. Another useful trick is to use text wrapping for long class labels. Like this: Like Loading... Print Composer 2.0 – Take #4.

Dr. Samuel Johnson once reminisced to his friend Boswell about his college years and how he had treated his tutor with casual insolence. "That, sir," said Boswell, "was great fortitude of mind.

" "No, sir," Johnson barked, "stark insensibility. " Stark insensibility is a famous trait of the late-adolescent male, and I myself was no slouch in this field. Half a century later I hope I have improved (my wife has been my tireless tutor for most of that period). Yes, it's got an ugly case fatality rate. In three and a half weeks we have learned scraps of scraps of data, a handful of pieces in a thousand-piece jigsaw puzzle without a picture on the box. I can well imagine the pressures that people are already feeling in the government ministries and health agencies around the world; this is just a story to most of us, and pandemic porn to some, but to the health experts it's already a war. Push changes to update the map. Note that the 2013 numbers and details are collected from numerous sources and can't be considered reliable or complete. 2014 cases mainly come from WHO reports and are more consistent and complete with respect to onset dates and locations. Note however that 46 deaths were reported for 144 cases in 2013 and 72 deaths in January & February 2014 whereas these data report only 37 deaths over all. This is because this site can only show deaths that have been linked to known cases and many deaths are reported without that link. Many thanks to Lu Lu at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology, University of Edinburgh for help compiling the initial list from Chinese media sources. More recently the WHO's Global Alert and Response, Disease Outbreak News pages have been reliably listing information on individual cases. H7N9 Pandemic Cases & Sequences. Editorial revision: I have updated this blog post to correct a few inaccuracies that I referred to from Stephen Few’s post and I have removed the attack I made on Stephen himself. We should all keep in mind that what we write can have a long-lasting impact on relationships. We need to remain civil and keep our comments and thoughts to the subject, not the people. Allow me to refer you to this great advice from “22 Things Happy People Do Differently”. In particular: Don’t hold grudges Treat everyone with kindness Speak well of others Take the time to listen Now back to the apology.

You may think of me as a bit of a weasel now, and I’m ok with that. With all of this in mind, I’ve had time to reflect on some things I said last week and I would like to issue an apology to Tableau. There are a three people in particular that helped set me straight, and I thank them. My wife. Let me clearly state that I am not upset about what I wrote. You Can Reach Into This Monitor And Touch The Interface. Gesture controls, like Leap Motion, could bring a slew of new control paradigms to desktop computing. But will any of us want to wave our hands in the air all day long? Probably not. That’s the premise behind SpaceTop, developed at MIT Media Lab by Jinha Lee (who you know from this and this) with Alex Olwal, Hiroshi Ishii, and Cati Boulanger. It’s a transparent monitor that tracks your bare hands through Kinect, then enables you to manually grasp windows and other objects to manipulate them.

That unto itself is pretty neat, but in its latest update, the project has a fantastic new trick. Watch the video closely, and you’ll see that underneath each window a drop shadow is formed. These drop shadows are actually makeshift trackpads, enabling a user to manipulate an object in 3-D space one moment, then rest their hands on the table and scroll around content the next. The fact of the matter is, some gestures just feel better in 2-D. “I don’t believe 3-D is the future. See more here. Global alcohol consumption. Having looked at the global patterns of consumption of milk and cheese, meat and fish, as well as tea and coffee, the GeoCurrents will now conclude this mini-series with a look at alcohol. As the maps on the left show, alcohol drinking habits vary drastically around the world. Such maps, however, need to be regarded with some skepticism. The blue-colored map above supposedly depicts data from 2008, but it appears to be incorrect in several areas.

For example, Belarus and Ukraine are colored as consuming between 5-7 liters of alcohol per capita annually, whereas the multicolored map for 2005 from the 2011 report from the World Health Organization places those two countries in the “12.5 liters and above” category. I doubt that alcohol consumption in Ukraine and Belarus has halved in just 3-5 years. According to the WHO report, global consumption in 2005 amounted to the equivalent of 6.13 liters of pure alcohol per person (aged 15 years or older). Google Fusion Tables provides a relatively easy way to display geographic data on top of Google Maps. Data can be uploaded in .csv, .tsv, or .txt file formats and the geocoded based on a field (or fields) that is designated as having location information (address, city, country, lat/long, etc.).

This process works well for point data and for creating heat maps based on countries. If you have specialized polygon or line data that you want to overlay onto Google Maps, Google only allows for the importing of KML files for geographic data. Importing a shapefile into Google Fusion Tables If you have a shapefile that you want to import directly into Google Fusion Tables without having to take the extra step of first converting it to a KML file, Shape Escape provides the most straightforward way to do this.

Prepping a Shapefile for Conversion to Google Fusion Tables To set the correct data frame projection, first load an instance of ArcGIS. Now add the shapefile you need to reproject.

The second news is that Google has decided to power down Google Reader. In the last August I released an alpha version of the News app, see my previous post. The app was not stable enough to be shipped today with ownCloud 5 (yes, remember news number one: oC 5 released today!). We are developing the app in the master branch of the ownCloud apps repository on github.

Google Reader is dead. Here’s my paper on evidence and teaching for the education minister. I was asked by Michael Gove (Secretary of State for Education) and the Department for Education to look at how to improve the use of evidence in schools. I think there are huge, positive opportunities for teachers here, that go way beyond just doing a few more trials: there is a need for a coherent “information architecture” that supports evidence based practice. I was asked to write something that explains what this would look like, specifically for teachers. Pasted below is the briefing note from DfE press office, and then the text of what I wrote for them, which came out this week. You can also download a PDF from the DfE website here. If you’re interested, there’s more on evidence based policy in this BBC Radio 4 documentary I did here, and in this Cabinet Office paper on trials in government that I co-authored here, as well as zillions more posts.

Hope you like it! And here’s the paper… I think there is a huge prize waiting to be claimed by teachers. This is not an unusual idea. Plugins Repository.
