Computers use these little bits, which are composed of ones and zeros, to do things and talk to other computers. All your files, for instance, are kept in the computer as binary files and translated into words and pictures by the software (which is also ones and zeros).
This two number system, is called a "binary number system" since it has only two numbers in it. The decimal number system in contrast has ten unique digits, zero through nine. But although computer data and file size is normally measured in binary code using the binary number system (counted by factors of two 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, etc), the prefixes for the multiples are based on the metric system! The nearest binary number to 1,000 is 2^10 or 1,024; thus 1,024 bytes was named a Kilobyte.

Within a month of creation, the site garnered a national award from Earthlink, and visits quickly rose. In 1999, I joined forces with a silent partner and rebranded the site as Knowledge Hound. Our traffic grew dramatically. We were featured on TV by affiliate stations for NBC News and CBS News. In February of 2011, Google changed their search algorithm to downgrade all directory websites. In September of 2013, I finally gave up and deleted the Knowledge Hound directory, moving my focus to the 100+ articles that I've written. It's been a long and amazing journey. As our teams debated the finer points of Big Data, Fast Data, and machine learning technologies, it became clear to us that we could find no better colleagues than the guys at OneRiot. As a part of Walmart, we're continuing to work with the intensity of a technology startup. Today I’m pumped to share the news that, within 30 days of that first meeting, we have closed a transaction to acquire the key assets of OneRiot. The technology team at OneRiot will move to Silicon Valley and become part of @WalmartLabs in September.
