For someone in the grips of a personal crisis, struggling with depression or considering suicide, the thought of picking up a telephone and talking to a (well-meaning) stranger at a crisis hotline can be a terrifying thought. Hotlines are staffed by incredible people, but there's no way of knowing who's gonna be on the other end of the line. An army vet grappling with PTSD might not want to talk to a 20-year old woman who has no experience in the line of fire. Or the a teenage girl might be looking to talk to someone like her, and not a grown man. The result? Someone who desperately needs help continues to battle on their own.
