It was the last day of the ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) 2015 when the Workshop on Web Archiving and Digital Libraries (WADL) 2015 was scheduled and it started on time.
When I entered in the workshop room, I realized we needed a couple of more chairs to accommodate all the participants, which was a good problem to have. The session started with a brief informal introduction of individual participants. Without wasting any time, the lightning talks session was started. Gerhard Gossen started the lightning talk session with his presentation on "The iCrawl System for Focused and Integrated Web Archive Crawling". It was a short description of how iCrawl can be used to create archives for current events, targeted primarily to researchers and journalists.

This is a guest post from Elizabeth England, National Digital Stewardship Resident, and Eric Hanson, Digital Content Metadata Specialist, at Johns Hopkins University.
Elizabeth: In my National Digital Stewardship Residency at Johns Hopkins University’s Sheridan Libraries, I am responsible for a digital preservation project addressing a large backlog (about 50 terabytes) of photographs documenting the university’s born-digital visual history. Since 2004, the campus photography unit, Homewood Photography, has used an exclusively digital workflow and the photographs have been stored on optical media. Before I arrived, the Ferdinand Hamburger University Archives had already taken physical custody of thousands of these DVDs, but needed someone who could be devoted to processing this large-scale collection.
All this to say, this collection is being processed at a more granular level than may be expected given its size. Digital History, Web Archives, and the History of 20th Century Canada. Special Libraries Cataloguing, Inc. Surviving Cataloging Class. Editor’s note: This is a guest post by Tracy Wasserman Many LIS students dread cataloging/classification class, a required course in some library schools.
I found the class piqued my interest enough to take advanced cataloging/classification, a road travelled by few judging by the small class size. This was against the advice of my academic advisor, who cautioned not to take advanced cataloging unless I wanted to be a cataloger. Well, I thought, how would I know whether or not I wanted to be a cataloger if I didn’t take advanced cataloging?
Turns out, I enjoyed the experience immensely. Open Knowledge and Open Data. Category:Open access (publishing) About « The Open Library. At Centre for Learning, a school in Bangalore, we have an open library both in concept and reality.
This means that there is free and open access to all material and resources, at all times of day and night, and throughout the year. Mutual trust and shared responsibility provide the ground from which this library functions. The rules and conventions of library interaction evolve out of a sense of co-operation, consideration and care for the community as a whole. The challenge for the librarian is not one of policing and monitoring, but to perceive and hold the library and its users as a vibrant functioning whole. This can only be done when the community of users feels a sense of ownership and accountability. The collection in this library reflects the commitment to quality and excellence. A report published this week by OCLC Research asks the burning question of no one, no where: “Does every research library need a digital humanities center?” The answer, of course, is of course not. Of course, I’m being rude. The click-bait question, as posed, had a foregone conclusion — but there’s much to recommend in the report, even if it fails to define a “DH center” in any clear way, makes an unwarranted assumption that “DH academics” and librarians exist in mutually-exclusive categories, and bases too much of its understanding of faculty and researcher perceptions on the inadequate sample of some conference-going and a couple of focus groups (however carefully convened and accurately reported). every center must evolve — evolve, or die.
Okay, the chief value of the report is in its clear reinforcement of the notion that a one-size-fits-all approach to digital scholarship support never fits all. How is that good for the humanities, digital or otherwise? No good deed goes un-punished. Scholars' Lab. Subject Guides. Scholarly communication can be defined as “the system through which research and other scholarly writings are created, evaluated for quality, disseminated to the scholarly community, and preserved for future use.
The system includes both formal means of communication, such as publication in peer-reviewed journals, and informal channels, such as electronic listservs.” In an environment that is increasingly global, the ARL Scholarly Communication program encourages the advancement of effective, extensible, sustainable, and economically viable models of scholarly communication that provide barrier-free access to quality information. ARL also encourages initiatives for new modes of scholarship that demonstrate promise for the future.
