The Signal: Digital Preservation

Elizabeth: In my National Digital Stewardship Residency at Johns Hopkins University’s Sheridan Libraries, I am responsible for a digital preservation project addressing a large backlog (about 50 terabytes) of photographs documenting the university’s born-digital visual history. Since 2004, the campus photography unit, Homewood Photography, has used an exclusively digital workflow and the photographs have been stored on optical media. Before I arrived, the Ferdinand Hamburger University Archives had already taken physical custody of thousands of these DVDs, but needed someone who could be devoted to processing this large-scale collection. All this to say, this collection is being processed at a more granular level than may be expected given its size. Digital History, Web Archives, and the History of 20th Century Canada.

Editor’s note: This is a guest post by Tracy Wasserman Many LIS students dread cataloging/classification class, a required course in some library schools.

Surviving Cataloging Class

I found the class piqued my interest enough to take advanced cataloging/classification, a road travelled by few judging by the small class size. This was against the advice of my academic advisor, who cautioned not to take advanced cataloging unless I wanted to be a cataloger. Well, I thought, how would I know whether or not I wanted to be a cataloger if I didn’t take advanced cataloging? Turns out, I enjoyed the experience immensely. Open Knowledge and Open Data.
