MySpace, R.I.P – GigaOM. It’s not a good idea to speak ill of the dead. It is OK, however, to speak the truth, however harsh it might seem, about the living dead. Rupert Murdoch’s $580 million MySpace purchase has outlived not only its utility, but has also finally hit its expiration date. That last step came with the announcement this afternoon that Owen Van Natta was stepping down as chief executive of the company. This was nine months after he joined the Los Angeles-based venture. It’s circling the drains, if you ask me. Is anyone surprised that Van Natta left? I’m not. When the trio came together, I asked the question, Can Internet’s Free Agents Save MySpace? News Corp is counting on the equivalent of three Internet free agents to replace Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson and revive MySpace, the big but not so bountiful social network. From what I gather, there were conflicts between Van Natta and his boss, Miller.

I don’t blame them. What the company needed was radical transformation. Saving Money, Space, and Energy With Blade Virtualization - wash. In 1986, Attorney Nicholas Barrett founded Nicholas Barrett & Associates with just himself and an assistant running the business. But over the last 24 years, that small two-person office has grown into a bustling 45-person law firm specializing in litigation, real estate law, collections, and loan servicing. Like any busy law office, Nicholas Barrett & Associates is a document-driven business that depends on reliable e-mail and file servers to meet clients' deadlines.

However, over the years, the company's 12 rack-mounted 2U white-box Windows 2003 servers utilized for file and print, email, application, web, SQL and document storage, had become increasingly unreliable. Further, the company's infrastructure had become prone to crashes due to single points of failure including switches, hard drives, and RAID controllers. They were also running out of space in their small server room inhibiting expansion of their network infrastructure. A Simpler Solution Disaster Recovery The Payoff. The Ars Technica Guide to I/O Virtualization. Virtualization is a key enabling technology for the modern datacenter. Without virtualization, tricks like load balancing and multitenancy wouldn't be available from datacenters that use commodity x86 hardware to supply the on-demand compute cycles and networked storage that powers the current generation of cloud-based Web applications.

Even though it has been used pervasively in datacenters for the past few years, virtualization isn't standing still. Rather, the technology is still evolving, and with the launch of I/O virtualization support from Intel and AMD it's poised to reach new levels of performance and flexibility. Our past virtualization coverage looked at the basics of what virtualization is, and how processors are virtualized. Part 1 described three ways in which a component might be virtualized; emulation, "classic" virtualization, and paravirtualization, and part 2 described in more detail how each of these methods was used in CPU virtualization. PCIe operates similarly. Your new ISP? Google launches 1Gbps fiber-to-the-home trial. People have wondered for years what Google might be up to with all that dark fiber it had bought up around the country. Now, we may have an answer: delivery of open-access, fiber-to-the-home Internet service at speeds of 1Gbps.

That's right: 1Gbps. Google has just announced a trial run of its new scheme, and it's asking city, county, or state officials to let it know if they're interested in a pilot project. In its initial phase, the fiber optic network will serve anywhere from 50,000 to 500,000 people. As for the speeds, they make cable's DOCSIS 3.0 and Verizon's FiOS look like also-rans. The goal is to use the system as a high-speed testbed for next generation apps and deployment techniques. Perhaps the best part of the announcement was the "open access" bit. It's hard to know how far the company plans to take this. Google stresses that this is an experiment, and it may simply be used as a proof-of-concept and a data-gathering project.

Google May Offer Buzz Independently From Gmail. Google says it may allow people to participate in Google Buzz without having it integrated within Gmail, in addition to offering a combined Gmail service. That may be a welcome move for users of both products, especially in light of the substantial privacy concerns voiced this week about Google Buzz. “It’s clear that interest in Buzz may extend beyond the current Gmail base, and we’re open to serving that community,” said Bradley Horowitz, Google’s VP of Product Marketing, when I spoke to him about some Buzz issues at the TED Conference.

Horowitz stressed that Google would still offer a version of Buzz within Gmail, in addition to any independent version. “We think that Buzz within Gmail is a great experience, and we’ll keep offering that as well,” Horowitz said. Trademarks, “Big Names” & Buzz One issue with Buzz is that it may be difficult for companies to have profiles that match their trademarks, or famous people might have similar issues. Buzz & Privacy. Maybe Steve Jobs was right about Adobe. Last week, after reading about Steve Jobs' stinging criticism of Adobe, I wrote a spirited defense of Adobe Flash in my DaniWeb blog.

I'm here today to say I was wrong. I should probably have known better than to challenge the wisdom of Sir Steve, but after getting comments from several knowledgeable people and reading some follow-up posts, I'm convinced that Flash is dying a slow death and HTML 5 and other technologies could finally drive a stake through its heart. The original comment from Jobs about Adobe being lazy and uncreative around Flash seemed overly harsh to me and not completely accurate--at least from some of the ways I've seen Adobe use the Flash platform, such as Adobe AIR for instance. But a post on The Unofficial Apple Weblog, a publication I have a great deal of respect for, made me rethink my position once and for all.

Oracle has officially put both legs on the cloud-computing bandwagon, recently launching a roughly 50-date global road show on the topic for developers and system administrators. The move stands in contrast to CEO Larry Ellison's well-publicized mocking of cloud computing, which he has deemed a rebranding and conflation of existing technologies. But it's not as if the ongoing tour wasn't telegraphed. During a recent webcast on how the company plans to use the assets it gained from the purchase of Sun Microsystems, executives indicated Oracle's main focus will be on helping customers build private clouds.

In 2008, Ellison himself said, albeit with sarcasm, that Oracle would make cloud computing announcements in the future. "If orange is the new pink we'll make orange blouses. Attendees of the events will be able to "break through the haze" surrounding the topic, as "Oracle experts" clarify how companies can take advantage of "enterprise cloud computing. By Scott Berinato | 2:55 PM February 18, 2010 Data visualization is cool. It’s also becoming ever more useful, as the vibrant online community of data visualizers (programmers, designers, artists, and statisticians — sometimes all in one person) grows and the tools to execute their visions improve. Jeff Clark is part of this community.

He, like many data visualization enthusiasts, fell into it after being inspired by pioneer Martin Wattenberg‘s landmark treemap that visualized the stock market. Clark’s latest work shows much promise. He’s built four engines that visualize that giant pile of data known as Twitter. “Twitter is an obvious data source for lots of text information,” says Clark. His tools are definitely early stages, but even now, it’s easy to imagine where they could be taken. Take TwitterVenn. Right away I see Apple tweets are dominating, not surprisingly.

I was shocked at the relative infrequency of “google” tweets. Clark has also created TwitArcs. Finally, the Stream Graph. PleaseRobMe website reveals dangers of social network. A website called PleaseRobMe claims to reveal the location of empty homes based on what people post online. The Dutch developers told BBC News the site was designed to prove a point about the dangers of sharing precise location information on the internet. The site scrutinises players of online game Foursquare, which is based on a person's location in the real world. PleaseRobMe extracts information from players who have chosen to post their whereabouts automatically onto Twitter. "It started with me and a friend looking at our Twitter feeds and seeing more and more Foursquare posts," said Boy Van Amstel, one of PleaseRobMe's developers. "People were checking in at their house, or their girlfriend's or friend's house, and sharing the address - I don't think they were aware of how much they were sharing.

" Simple search The website took just four hours to create. "It's basically a Twitter search - nothing new," said Mr Van Amstel. "The website is not a tool for burglary," he said.
