It was 22 years ago and Conron, now 81, was working as the breeding and puppy-walking manager for the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia when his boss set him a tough task. A blind woman from Hawaii had written asking if it they could provide a guide dog that would not shed hair, because her husband was allergic to it. "I said, 'Oh yes, this will be a piece of cake. The standard poodle is a working dog, it doesn't shed hair, it'll be great.' Conron decided there was one possibility left – take his best labrador bitch and mate it with a standard poodle. The labradoodle proved to be a brilliant dog for the blind, and the woman in Hawaii was happy. Does that happen a lot? Now, the designer dog has become a status symbol.

Neither of their pets, a 14-year-old cat and an 11-year-old dog, do well being boarded, and it was much less stressful for me to stay with them than it would have been to send them somewhere. I brought my dogs with me, so it was a very full household. Their elderly Lab cross, Duke, already knew Layla quite well. However, he wasn’t as familiar with my youngest pup, Mischief. Peter Dobias, DVM One would think that most vets learn about anal glands in vet school. This was not true in my case. It was our dachshund Gerda who initiated me in the less pleasant part of living with a dog. Dachshunds are very passionate when it comes to tracking and they love being in the forest. I remember taking Gerda to our cottage near the German border for the first time. This is how I learned that dogs had anal glands. Dog Whisperer, Dog Psychology and Cesar Millan. Sophie Trudeau. Chien destructeur: une nouvelle approche du budget-temps. Wolf to Dog - Scientists Agree on How, but Not Where. This controversy is intriguing even if you’re not a dog lover.
It illuminates the challenges scientists face as they excavate the history of any species from its DNA. Scientists have long agreed that the closest living relatives of dogs are wolves, their link confirmed by both anatomy and DNA. Somewhere, at some point, some wolves became domesticated. They evolved not only a different body shape, but also a different behavior. Instead of traveling in a pack to hunt down prey, dogs began lingering around humans. A few fossils supply some tantalizing clues to that transformation.
In the 1990s, scientists started using new techniques to explore the origin of dogs. In a 2002 study, for example, Peter Savolainen, now at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, and his colleagues concluded that dogs evolved in East Asia. Are undeclared artificial preservatives in pet food a problem?
By Mary Straus and Nancy Kerns Recently we’ve heard from a number of dog owners who are concerned about the use of ethoxyquin to preserve fish meal that is used in dog foods. We’ve had one e-mail forwarded to us several times expressing worry over links between undeclared ethoxyquin in pet foods and canine cancer. We have long advised owners to pass over dog food that contains artificial preservatives such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), tert-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ), propyl gallate, and ethoxyquin, in favor of products made with natural preservatives, such as tocopherols (vitamin E), citric acid (vitamin C), and rosemary extract. Though synthetic preservatives were once – as recently as 20 years ago – the usual preservative found in all dry dog foods, today, they appear only on the labels of low-cost and lower-quality products. It turns out, though, that this is just part of the story. Liste descriptive des nourritures canines retrouvées sur le marché.
