Send Postcards That Smell Like Favorite Foods

Well one student in China has a concept to capture the aroma of food on a postcard. The ‘food printer’ would use a camera to take the picture and a smell extractor to collect the aroma simultaneously, then prints a postcard with aroma ink. Zhu Jingxuan, an industrial design student at the Fashion & Art Design Institute of Donghua University, drew the sketch and made the model device with the help of Sony’s Student Design Workshop. Jingxuan’s food printer concept won the “most-fun” award during the workshop. Jingxuan was one of six students to win awards and the winners worked with designers in Sony China Creative Center in Shanghai to turn their ideas into reality.

Just back, and the project definitely worth seeing in person at Siggraph 2012 comes from Disney Research - Botanicus Interacticus turns plants into human-computer interfaces… caress, grab, approach the plant to change the visualizations!

Botanicus Interacticus by Disney Research

Plants as interfaces seems to be a growing trend. This reminded me of Mathieu Lehanneur’s 2010 Once Upon A Dream bed that we saw in Milan, where you barely touch the plant hanging overhead to activate the light dimmer. Also, NOTCOT.org just highlighted Viktor Kölbig’s Aura, which turns a plant in a glass of water into a light, and you touch the plant to change colors. However, Botanicus Interacticus, using Disney Research’s Touché technology takes those concepts even further, being able to sense various gestures, such as sliding of fingers on the stem, touching, grabbing, and even proximity to the plant as well as the amount of touch and more!

In fact, they created an amazing tactile feedback (accidentally!) Lapka — Personal Environment Monitor. Many human 'prototypes' coexisted in Africa

The discoveries suggests that at least three distinct species of humans co-existed in Africa. The research adds to a growing body of evidence that runs counter to the popular perception that there was a linear evolution from early primates to modern humans. The research has been published in the journal Nature. Totally not 'shopped pics from Mars. Rise in Weather Extremes Threatens Infrastructure. The World Intellectual Property Organization has been working on a treaty to protect the rights of disabled people with regard to copyright since 1985.

Most of the world's rich countries and developing nations support this work. However, two key entities are stonewalling and holding up the treaty: the European Commission (despite strong support from the European Parliament); and the USA, whose trade negotiators are listening to big business lobby groups like the Association of American Publishers, who oppose any treaty that creates rights for information users instead of corporations.

The idea of the treaty is to harmonize the rights of disabled people in different countries. For example, in the USA, it's legal to make assistive editions of books -- audiobooks, ebooks, Braille and large type books -- without permission from the copyright holder. The same right exists in Canada. How to: Build a living sea creature from spare parts. A couple of days ago, Rob told you about scientists who had built a "jellyfish" in the lab, using rat cells.
