I’m sure this has happened to everyone and I’m sure you remember the panic it causes trying to plan a lesson, brush your teeth and get dressed instantaneously. Well fear not, here are 5 ESL emergency lessons that don’t require any prep or photocopying, that you can use in just these instances. I adapted this idea from a seminar by Michael Swan and have used it many times in class successfully. Draw a picture frame on the board. Ask students to describe the picture inside (there is none, they must use their imagination). Once the students have come up with a full description of the picture ask them to recap and then put them into small groups.

When we struggle to express ourselves, we feel unvalued and insecure. As human beings, we want to participate in group discussions and have an impact on the society around us. In the modern world, we communicate across borders. English is the closest thing we have to an international language. By speaking better English, people all over the world can hear our voice. Well, English teachers and English classes definitely help. What you need is to become a self-directed learner, somebody who takes responsibility for their own learning and creates their own learning programme to develop their English. Now, it’s certainly true that speaking is a social activity and is best done with other people. You can do the same with your English.

(Kunskapskrav för E i år 9 i engelska) När jag talar med eleverna om detta brukar jag ta upp extrema hälsningen. Ett annat sätt att påvisa stilen är att använda så kallade clines, gradvisa skalor. Det jag vill påvisa är vad eleverna redan kan. Ofta hamnar jag i slutändan av året i läget att några elever har lite mer att visa, lite mer att ge som de inte lyckats få fram under året.
