OuiShare Fest 2016: the Slow Motion Replay — Enspiral Tales

As the countryside slips past me at 300 kph, I have a desire to review a few moments from the past few days. I need to slow them right down so I can actually notice what they look like. I’m going to examine three moments from the OuiShare Festival that drew a global community together for a few days in Paris: These stories will be about 20% reporting and 80% interpretation.

In my 20s I had the impression that my reality was fundamentally illegible to the academics of the past.

Making a living from open source hardware meant I was participating in an international network of people who freely shared their “intellectual property” with each other, growing a common resource of benefit to everyone. My peers included a 1970s Californian performance artist, a 12-year-old in a small Spanish town looking for mental stimulation, and a Russian engineer who remixed my ideas and returned them to the Internet extended and improved. This socio-economic reality was beyond the imagination of Hayek, Keynes, Marx or Smith. Bootstrapping a bossless organisation in 3 easy steps ;-) — Enspiral Tales. Bootstrapping a bossless organisation in 3 easy steps ;-) My first impression at OuiShare Fest was a weird utopian blockchain mania: a poorly understood but massively hyped technology that will somehow fix all our social, political, and economic inequities.

As I got to know some of the people here though, I started to see through the fog of hype and find a lot of incredible people taking on tough challenges in a really pragmatic/idealistic way. Everyone here has an awesome idea, and they want to work on it in a decentralised, leaderless, nonhierarchical, bossless way. But the question that so many of them have in common is about bootstrapping: how do I go from this idealistic concept to a highly functioning non-hierarchical purpose-driven organisation?

Cooperativa Integral Catalana – Fairness and the commons, an interview with Enric Duran

Prior to co-founding the Catalan Integral Cooperative — a Commons Transition partner project creating a cooperative, self managed public system in Catalonia — Duran became famous for his 2008 “bank action”, an act which involved defrauding 39 Spanish banks of nearly €500,000 and subsequently distributing these funds to a variety of activist movements and social causes. He presently lives as a fugitive outside Spain, and is currently busy organizing the FairCoop Open Cooperative, a community-built effort to alleviate global economic inequalities through the use of mutual credit, reputation systems and cryptocurrencies.

FairCoop’s “Coop Forest” Regarding Commons Transition, the first question is, can you define Commons Transition, and what it means to you? Do you see some existing examples of Commons Transition today? There are more and more examples of commons resources. Well, there are a lot of things that are important. Hm.
