21 Anchor Charts That Teach Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is one of the most complex skills to teach. It’s also arguably the most important. Students will only succeed in other subject areas (and make it a lifelong habit to read for pleasure) if they understand what they are reading on an ingrained level. Many factors go into the development of reading comprehension, including building an extensive vocabulary, asking questions, making connections and visualization. Using Charts to Review and Reflect

This is not only helpful, but often necessary depending upon the length of winter breaks from school. Charts offer the perfect opportunity for review and reflection because they are the visual record of the teaching and learning that has occurred in any classroom, a time capsule to open up and explore. Start with a classroom tour. You can do this as a whole class or break into smaller groups. Once the class has reviewed the existing charts in the classroom, reflection and goal setting can begin. Finally, take a look around the classroom and decide as a class which charts are no longer needed, then retire them. Now that you have done some house cleaning and rearranging, involving children in this process, you will all feel refreshed and renewed, ready to move forward, with purpose and direction.
