Universal Design & Auto Design: We Are Getting Older

I recently watched an elderly lady struggle to extricate herself from the front seat of a car. "Now there is a huge opportunity," I said to myself, "we live in an aging society, yet we still design for the young and able. Why not address this huge, important market? " There is a tendency to shy away from designing for the impaired. This is a special-interest group, it is feared, one that will drive away other customers. There are many opportunities for improvement within the automobile. Some auto companies talk about the problem. Much remains to be done to the insides of cars to make them a lot more accessible. At Home in the Modern World: Modern Design & Architecture. Having lived in, and loved, a modern house built in 1954 in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood since buying it in 1996, architect Karen Braitmayer and her husband, marine mechanic David Erskine, recently came to realize that the house was overdue for some modifications.

Braitmayer, whose firm, Studio Pacifica, specializes in universal access space planning and ADA compliance for commercial and residential projects, is a wheelchair user, as is her and Erskine’s teenage daughter. With its open layout and single-floor plan, the house worked fairly well for many years, but, as Braitmayer says, “It was really my daughter growing up that spurred us to make some changes. Orchard House by Studio Octopi. Named Orchard House, the building sits on the former site of a walled garden and orchard in Wiltshire and Studio Octopi was asked by the planning authorities to integrate the historic stone wall into the proposals, even though it had almost entirely eroded. "We had to reinstate the wall and this helped to form a series of compound courtyard spaces," architect Chris Romer-Lee told Dezeen. Private Residence on Orcas Island by Gary Gladwish Architecture. "Large walls of glass and swinging doors mean there are no thresholds between outside and inside. " "The open fireplaces inside and on the patio create a pleasant mood and forge additional links to nature. " More at Gary Gladwish Architecture. Photos: Will Austin. Universal Design Living Laboratory. When my husband Mark and I, newly wed in 1995, were building our two-story “dream home,” we carefully considered the design, even to the point of making doors wide enough for a person in a wheelchair in case one of our aging relatives had to temporarily live with us.

We thought this would be our retirement home. Boy, were we wrong! On June 13, 1998, everything changed. While I was biking with Mark on that beautiful spring day, a three and half ton tree I was riding by suddenly collapsed on top of me, crushing my spine and leaving me paralyzed from the waist down. Modules Addressing Special Education and Teacher Education. Tools you hold on to. Have you ever seen a single glove on the street and wondered who lost it?

Tools you hold on to.

We have too. As a reminder of the different hands our products need to comfortably fit - large, small, male, female, young, old and in between, OXO employees collect lost gloves around New York City and around the world. These gloves are prominently displayed at our office. OXO was founded in 1990 on the philosophy of Universal Design, which means the design of products usable by as many people as possible. It is important to note that Universal Design does not mean designing products fully usable by everybody, since there is no product that can truly fulfill the needs of all users. FAIA Founder Center for Universal Design Raleigh, North Carolina Ron Mace, creator of the term "universal design," was an articulate architect and determined advocate who influenced international thinking about design. For most of his life he used a wheelchair and understood what it was to try to participate in a world that was not designed to include him. Ron was the consummate champion for accessible and universal design, and the impact of his work will be felt for generations to come. Interviews with his colleagues provided much of the following detail about his early years. "Universal design seeks to encourage attractive, marketable products that are more usable by everyone. Beginning in the early 1970s, Ron created opportunities to demonstrate exemplary accessible design and seized every occasion to educate architects.

Ron's work at the Center for Universal Design addressed the broadest definition of user. He was always confident in his convictions. "He was on everything. Design_universel.
