Everyone knows that making it into the big leagues in any sport is hard...really hard...nearly impossible actually. The truth is less than half a percent of high school seniors playing baseball today will wind up getting drafted by a Major League Baseball team (that's 0.45% for those who are mathematically inclined). Of those drafted an even smaller percentage will make it out of the minors and an even smaller percentage will have long, successful, multi-million dollar careers.
This Department is leading the See Inside Manufacturing campaign, which sees 100s of manufacturers opening their doors to young people. I have no doubt that seeing our wonderful British companies in action will fire the imaginations and capture the hearts of the next generation. Getting young people interested in manufacturing both opens up the opportunities for them and will help plug skills gaps that are holding this country back. That’s why I was so pleased to be guest of honour at the launch of the Welding Skills Centre in Stevenage last Thursday. This fantastic initiative bonds welding supplies company Weldability SIF, North Hertfordshire College and The Welding Institute – triumvirate that combines strength, style & substance.

Packaging to Die(line) For… To a newbie, product packaging design requirements can seem rather mysterious if not overwhelming. Besides the package design itself, there are multiple issues involving FDA and USDA requirements as well as product and category specific government rules and regulations. For food items and consumables, nutritional panels and ingredient lists follow strict government guidelines. There are things you can and cannot state about a product’s health benefits and these vary depending on weather the product is classified as a food item or a supplement. Right now the future for design and technology education in England is very uncertain. We are in great and imminent danger of losing this essential subject from the core of the national curriculum where it belongs, alongside science and mathematics. We believe that every child should be entitled to study design and technology as a basic right of state education, to develop creative, practical and interpersonal skills which will equip them for life in a technological society. It is absolutely vital that we educate the next generations of designers and engineers to support an economy in which the Chancellor, George Osborne, wants ...the words: Made in Britain, Created in Britain, Designed in Britain and Invented in Britain to drive our nation forward.
Students who find science and maths interesting often don't know about the opportunities out there. Students get the opportunity to ask questions of real scientists and engineers. Subject areas Applied Science, Arts and Humanities, Biology, Chemistry, Design and Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing, ICT/Digital, Mathematics, Physics, Science

Whether you are an architect, someone who wants to visualize their (future) house or interior, or you just want to have fun with 3D modeling; 3D printing from SketchUp just got a little easier. Normally, printing SketchUp models involves file conversion, scale conversion and quite a bit of checking for mysterious things like "watertightness"...but that is now a thing of the past. We've created a plugin to make the SketchUp-to-object printing process easier than ever. Our plugin (wizard) lives right in SketchUp and helps you create a scale model of your design and prepare it for 3D printing.
