I noted that frequently the founding team divides 100% by the number of founders. I also cautioned that this is the WRONG WAY! I then went on to identify the factors that should be considered when making these decisions.

Since then, I have had several people tell me that while what I wrote certainly made sense, it wasn’t very helpful. They said that when it came to “rug cutting time,” absent an alternative method, equal shares was the only method that seemed to be “fair.” As a public service, I have “invented” a Founders’ Pie Calculator. Its primary benefits are that it provides a way to quantify the elements of the decision making process, and that it appears to be logical and fair. Let’s revisit the factors that should be considered. Idea Business Plan Preparation The development of an initial business plan is a surprisingly difficult and time-consuming effort.

This week I had the pleasure of speaking about UX at Eric Ries’ Startup Lessons Learned Conference. The event is at the center of the Lean Startup community and was attended by 400 entrepreneurs, developers, product managers, investors, and designers, with a simulcast audience of equal size.

I joined the “Design + Lean Startup = Lean UX” panel with Josh Seiden, Jeff Gothelf, and Zach Larson, hosted by Janice Fraser. We discussed the value of design in defining products and services, and shared techniques for incorporating design into startup culture and organizations. The startup community is hungry for good UX, and entrepreneurs, investors, and developers alike are recognizing the value and experience designers can contribute to a successful product team. Through @uxbooks, my twitter feed for all things UX book related, I regularly get asked to recommend books to people and more often than not, it’s to suggest entry-level publications.

Normally, when I’m feeling particularly lazy, my default response is to point them in the direction of Steve Krug’s seminal book Don’t Make Me Think. Although deserving of the praise it’s received, I thought it might be a touch unfair to only ever line Mr. Krug’s pockets, so I’ve put together this list of books by other authors just as deserving as Steve to give me a place to point people in the future. If you’re a seasoned UX professional, chances are you’ve heard of most of these books; in fact you’ve probably read, re-read, lost/sold/given-away, re-bought, and read them again just for old times’ sake, but hopefully there are a couple included that you may not have seen or considered reading before. Home. TED: Ideas worth spreading. User interface design. Graphics. GUI. 52 Weeks of UX. The user experience is made up of all the interactions a person has with your brand, company, or organization. This may include interactions with your software, your web site, your call center, an advertisement, with a sticker on someone else’s computer, with a mobile application, with your Twitter account, with you over email, maybe even face-to-face.

The sum total of these interactions over time is the user experience. The interaction designer plans for these moments. Part of their responsibility is to make all interactions positive, and includes aspects of the software, the copy-writing, the graphics, layout, flows, physical experiences. It’s a shame when one part of the experience is top notch and another is dreadful. User experience spans multiple practices. Web designers, traditionally secure in the role of page creators, now have a wider purview. Help.
