In school, what was considered “being creative”, like writing or drawing nice pictures was never my strength. Digital avatars may help treat schizophrenia. A digital avatar therapy could help treat schizophrenia by controlling the voices patients hear inside their heads while hallucinating, scientists say.

The computer-based system being developed at the University College London (UCL) in the UK could provide quick and effective therapy that is far more successful than current pharmaceutical treatments, helping to reduce the frequency and severity of episodes of schizophrenia. In an early pilot of this approach involving 16 patients and up to seven, 30 minute sessions of therapy, almost all of the patients reported an improvement in the frequency and severity of the voices that they hear. How Friends Ruin Memory: The Social Conformity Effect

We don’t passively perceive the world – we tell stories about it, translating the helter-skelter of events into tidy narratives. This is often a helpful habit, helping us make sense of mistakes, consider counterfactuals and extract a sense of meaning from the randomness of life. But our love of stories comes with a serious side-effect: like all good narrators, we tend to forsake the facts when they interfere with the plot. We’re so addicted to the anecdote that we let the truth slip away until, eventually, those stories we tell again and again become exercises in pure fiction. Just the other day I learned that one of my cherished childhood tales – the time my older brother put hot peppers in my Chinese food while I was in the bathroom, thus scorching my young tongue – actually happened to my little sister. NATURAL BORN CYBORGS? NATURAL BORN CYBORGS?

NATURAL BORN CYBORGS?

By Andy Clark We cannot see ourselves aright until we see ourselves as nature's very own cyborgs: cognitive hybrids who repeatedly occupy regions of design space radically different from those of our biological forbears. The hard task, of course, is now to transform all this from (mere) impressionistic sketch into a balanced scientific account of the extended mind. Introduction. I’ve always been incredibly fascinated with body language and how it helps us achieve our goals in life better. The power of body language is probably best described by Amy Cuddy’s famous quote: Saturnmond TITAN enthält mehr Kohlenwasserstoffe auf der Oberfläche als die Erde Öl-Reserven hat! A team of scholars at Oxford, led by philosopher Rebecca Roache, recently proposed the concept of using psychoactive drugs and futuristic technologies like mind-transfer to trick a prisoner’s brain into thinking they’ve been in prison for 1,000 years, even if it’s really only been a few hours.

Could Mind-Jail and Psychoactive Drugs Fix Overcrowded Prisons?

After the initial shock that this may even be possible, the idea raises an interesting question: Could this be a way to get people in and out of prison quicker, in essence solving the overcrowding problem in today’s prisons? When I posed the question to criminal justice expert David B. 7 Dinge, die es nicht geben dürfte - oder? - Archäologie. Now Police Can Reconstruct Your Face From DNA Evidence. Ancient "Giant Virus" Revived From Siberian Permafrost. Buried deep in the Siberian permafrost and untouched for over 30,000 years, researchers have discovered what is thought to be the newest representative of what are loosely known as "giant viruses. " A team led by Jean-Michel Claverie and Chantal Abergel of Aix-Marseille University in Marseille, France, made the discovery of the previously unknown virus, which has been dubbed Pithovirus sibericum and can be revived in the lab.

Their findings are detailed in a new article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
