Costumed in a cello-shaped bronze coat he had tailored to wear at the opening of the important Grosvenor Gallery in 1877, the budding arbiter of taste decided on the spot, as he put it, "to take up the critic's life. " His review of the Grosvenor show of Aesthetic art, for the Dublin University Magazine, was Wilde's first published prose work.
