PROJECTS. All Natural Lip Balm. The week leading up to the new year wasn't exactly how I had pictured it.

All Natural Lip Balm

It was the last week of the boys winter break. I had envisioned walks around downtown looking at the lights, taking down the Christmas tree together, continuing our holiday baking marathon and maybe even a little post Christmas mall browsing. But alas, none of those things happened. The flu happened. Or rather, what I guess must have been the flu. Thankfully, I had made a big batch of lip balm the week before Christmas to give as little handmade gifts to my girlfriends. GOLD LEAF PAPER MACHE BOWLS. So, I think this might be my favorite DIY to date.

GOLD LEAF PAPER MACHE BOWLS

It’s just so practical and pretty! A few friends and I decided we would get together once a month for an all day craft day. Just to create pretty things, simply for the sake of creating. Weather it be something we wear, or something for our homes, decorations for the holidays, or even little somethings for our babies. 39 DIY Christmas Gifts for Adults. Posted by Taylor Oakes The past 2 years have been pretty expensive for me.

39 DIY Christmas Gifts for Adults

I graduated school, moved out of two different apartments in Toronto, spent a year and a half doing long distance in my relationship, moved across the country, bought (another) dog, bought a house & paid off 4 years worth of student loans. *exhale* So yeah, needless to say, last Christmas I gave my family love (aka: nothing). DIY Stemware Snow Globes. There is an easy and interesting way you can have a fairytale Christmas and not spend nearly half of your month’s salary on mass-produced items.

DIY Stemware Snow Globes

Instead, use that money on your loved ones, and make your own decorations. Start with these inexpensive DIY stemware snow globes. To begin, you will need stemware (a brandy glass and a red wine goblet from IKEA does the trick as well), small plastic reindeer or other Christmas figurines you might think off, outdoor miniature scenery are also useful, artificial snow or glitter, a cardboard, marker, pair of scissors, hot glue gun.

First thing to do is use the marker to trace the circumference of the opening (glass placed upside down) on the cardboard. Cut the resulting shape. DIY Filmmaking Tips. Papier mache: Litere. HOW TO: ILLUSTRATE IN TEN STEPS. 7th May 2013 I’ve always been intrigued (and slightly baffled) by the process by which illustrators create their beautiful imagery, so I’m very happy that one of my all time favourite artists Kelly Smith (aka Birdy & Me) has agreed to shed some light on her process – from the first idea all the way through to the finished piece.

HOW TO: ILLUSTRATE IN TEN STEPS

For those of you out there not familiar with her work, Kelly has the type of talent that most of us can only dream about – the ability to create whimsical and yet life like imagery that merges fashion and beauty to perfection. In short she draws life as we would all like to live it, full of flowers, pastels hues and perfectly tousled waves. Her illustrations have been commissioned by an awe inspiring number of magazines and brands, including Vogue, Net-a-Porter, H&M and Elle, and she is just about to publish the second book in a series entitled Sticker Fashionista. Pin It. DIY ROPE BOWL. 15th July 2013 If you’ve been tuning in over the last few months you may have guessed that I’ve got a bit of an addiction to rope.

DIY ROPE BOWL

There’s just something so perfect about the texture, and the fact that you can make so many different things out of it – it takes on such varying forms depending on the technique that you use (see here and here). As I delve into the world of rope craft I’ve stumble upon so many amazing designers who work with rope on a day to day basis – turning an everyday mundane material into anything but.

Gemma Patford, a designer I found on instagram (where else?) , has mastered the art of creating bowls, vessels and planters out of rope. Pin It. DIY RAFFIA COLLAR NECKLACE. 3rd December 2011 Raffia is one of my favourite materials at the moment for DIY projects.

DIY RAFFIA COLLAR NECKLACE

And it seems many designers would agree – given the amount of raffia that adorned heels, clutches, waists, pompoms, pencil skirts and just about everything else on the S/S12 runways. I love that it adds a subtle tribal accent to a classic outfit, and the texture is great for making jewellery and embellishing clothes. A couple of months ago I made a pair of raffia soled flatform sneakers and had plenty of raffia left over. DIY CIRCLE SKIRT. 26th July 2012 Another half hour DIY sewing project coming right up!

DIY CIRCLE SKIRT

I have such a huge thing for short voluminous circle skirts – and recently tried my hand at making one for myself. It turned out to be much easier than I thought! DIY Braided Bead Bracelet. It’s been awhile since our last bracelet DIY. I don’t know about you, but our wrists have been begging for another colorful addition for months now. So after playing with some materials that were already on hand, we’ve created a tutorial for a braided bead bracelet, which is a not so distant cousin of the hex nut and wrap bracelet.

Because honestly, you can never have too many . . . You’ll need: DIY Braided Rhinestone Necklace. A couple of weeks ago, we turned some vintage earrings into a pair of shoe clips. Inspired by Jolita‘s Mourning Necklace, we’re transforming vintage chains into pretty statement necklaces for spring this week. Sometimes antique rhinestone necklaces are just a tad too short and a bit too dainty so adding a bit of texture and color is the perfect way to add some much needed oomph.

DIY Friendship Necklace. As soon as Lauren and I saw this editorial in Flare Magazine, we knew we had to recreate these awesome, friendship bracelet-like necklaces. We promise they are super easy to make and the perfect way to pass the time during those long summer roadtrips. To make a 2-tone necklace, cut a long piece of rope and wrap two different colors of embroidery thread around its own bobbin. Tie a starter knot along with the two colored threads you are using, leaving at least 3 inches of slack, Tape down the slack to a flat surface or safety pin it something that will help keep it in place (feeling nostalgic yet?). Lay the color that isn’t being used (shown here in purple) in your left hand, along with the rope, and hold them taut. Take the active color (shown here in red) in your right hand, pass it over the rope, loop it under and back through the opening. So Sew Easy Sewing, free patterns, sewing clothes and accessories.

I tend to grab mason jars from garage sales and thrift stores whenever I can find them (today I actually snagged a turquoise one!). They have so many uses, from baking to crafts projects.

Mason Jar Snow Globe Tutorial. Rose Goldish (aka Copper) Wire LOVE Bracelet. Now we all know how I love a nice piece of chunky statement jewelry, but sometimes something dainty, delicate and demure is all you need (<- please read in your best Southern accent). I’ve seen these wire bracelets floating around Pinterest for awhile now and they continue to catch my eye. I don’t often work with wire, but these style bracelets are just too adorable not to give one a try. Framed Fabric Inspiration Board. Don’t get me wrong Pinterest is a good time, but my inner magazine junkie gets a real thrill from physically ripping out those glossie pages and pinning them on a real life inspiration board.
