See the Only Known Footage of Anne Frank, and Take a 3D Virtual Tour of Her House. Almost all of us have read the story of Anne Frank, but we surely all picture it quite differently. Most of us have seen the photos used on the various covers of The Diary of a Young Girl, and some of us have even gone to Amsterdam and walked through the home in which she wrote it. But now, thanks to the internet, we have access to historical imagery that can help everyone envision the life of Anne Frank a bit more clearly. Many years ago, we featured the only existing film of Frank, a 20-second clip from July 22, 1941 in which she looks on as a bride and groom pass below her window. Though short, the invaluable footage breathes a surprising amount of life into the cultural image of perhaps the 20th century’s most important diarist.

Even more comes from the 3D tour of her house and hiding place more recently made available online. You can enter the tour here. What happens when a historian of slavery teams up with a computer scientist? A stunning visualization of the transatlantic slave trade. Professor Adam Rothman, a historian of slavery at Georgetown University, and Matt Burdumy (GU ’15), a talented computer science major, joined forces in Professor Rothman’s History of the Atlantic World class to map more than 35,000 slaving voyages from 1500 to 1870. Under Rothman’s guidance, Burdumy used his skills as a programmer to geolocate data from the Transatlantic Slave Trade Database, and layer the data as a time-lapsed heatmap on a Google Map canvas. Burdumy created a three-part visualization of the historical geography of the Atlantic slave trade.

The first map shows the origin of slaving voyages, the second shows where slave ships embarked from West, West-Central, and Southeast Africa, and the third shows where the slavers disembarked their human cargoes in the Americas. Trading Consequences - Interlinked Visualizations The purpose of this visualization prototype is to provide a general overview of how commodities were discussed between 1750 and 1950 along geographic and temporal dimensions, as well as to show details on particular commodities or locations of interest.

It was developed to help explore a large collection of historic data (163999 documents) on a meta-level and to facilitate finding documents that may be relevant for more detailed inspection. The different visual components are interlinked: for instance, selecting a commodity from the list will update the map and timeline accordingly. Zooming into the map allows the exploration of locations and related commodities in more detail. Specifing a particular time range of interest, adjusts the map and commodity list accordingly. Selecting a document in the list view, opens the document at the digital archives.
