Monitor: The net generation, unplugged

THEY are variously known as the Net Generation, Millennials, Generation Y or Digital Natives. But whatever you call this group of young people—roughly, those born between 1980 and 2000—there is a widespread consensus among educators, marketers and policymakers that digital technologies have given rise to a new generation of students, consumers, and citizens who see the world in a different way. Growing up with the internet, it is argued, has transformed their approach to education, work and politics.

“Unlike those of us a shade older, this new generation didn't have to relearn anything to live lives of digital immersion. They learned in digital the first time around,” declare John Palfrey and Urs Gasser of the Berkman Centre at Harvard Law School in their 2008 book, “Born Digital”, one of many recent tomes about digital natives. But does it really make sense to generalise about a whole generation in this way?

Privacy, Security and Freedom: Social Concerns for the 21st Century is a course that explores the sociological and philosophical aspects of privacy, security and freedom in the 21st Century in the context of both theoretical and practical, policy-oriented aspects of these social concerns. To that end, one course exercise requires students to develop a hypothetical scenario on a security issue — school security or computer network security — and a policy that addresses the concerns raised by the scenario. Students choose one of the two options and then work in teams to develop the scenario and the policy. First, the teams meet in their own discussion areas to share research results and to reach consensus on details of the scenario.

Each group then begins the collaborative writing of the scenario in Buzzword, an online word processing tool that allows multiple users to edit the document at the same time (or not). Next, the teams develop the security policy. About - Features. Seamlessly integrating VoiceThread into your Learning Management System (LMS) is the key to user happiness.

In this show, Dan and Susan tackle the definition and ask why we should bother with instructional design. Download MP3 File<br/ >Show notes:<br/ > Why bother? Instructional Design is a popular phrase but few really understand what it is. Dan uses one word: intentionality. The long version: People who are thinking concretely wand with intention about how they are creating learning experiences for an audience, and using their assumptions about how people learn. Susan offers: The marriage of learning theory to instructional strategies that creates an environment conducive to a particular outcome.

ID Models. Instructional Design Models Models, like myths and metaphors, help us to make sense of our world. Whether derived from whim or from serious research, a model offers its user a means of comprehending an otherwise incomprehensible problem. An instructional design model gives structure and meaning to an I.D. problem, enabling the would-be designer to negotiate her design task with a semblance of conscious understanding. Models help us to visualize the problem, to break it down into discrete, manageable units. The value of a specific model is determined within the context of use. UW Stout email.
