Google finalized its acquisition of Motorola Mobility, announcing the news in a blog post Tuesday morning. The post, written by Google CEO Larry Page, marked the end of a long process that began in August when the $12.5-billion deal was announced. "Motorola is a great American tech company that has driven the mobile revolution, with a track record of over 80 years of innovation, including the creation of the first cell phone," Page wrote.

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Reuters) - Seven Republican presidential contenders meet face-to-face in their first major debate on Monday, with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney shaping up as the front-runner for the 2012 race. The nationally televised forum in New Hampshire will include most of the top-tier contenders in the battle for the right to challenge President Barack Obama, who still leads the Republican hopefuls in most opinion polls. "This marks the start of a new phase for the campaign as more people pay attention and the candidates begin to engage," said Fergus Cullen, a former chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party. While the raw figures for visitors vary from one metrics firm to the next (Nielsen’s unique visitors numbers are often much smaller than those of the ratings agency comScore, for example, and both rely mainly on home-based traffic rather than work-based, which may undercount total news consumption) the list and rank of top sites remains relatively consistent across measuring companies. In that mix, based on Nielsen’s data, legacy news organizations (those attached to a news operation that is in another platform such as television or print) account for about two-thirds of the top 25 sites (17 in all). Online-only ventures, split between pure aggregators and those that produce some original content and engage also in aggregation, account for the remaining third (eight sites in all). Specifically:

May 18 (Bloomberg) -- The engorged Mississippi River is cresting in the state that bears its name, rising to major flood stage and above in towns famous for Civil War battles, riverboat landings and antebellum homes. The river left standing its 1927 record in Greenville, Mississippi, when it crested there yesterday at 64.2 feet, below the 65.4-foot mark that helped lead to the creation of the U.S. Flood Control Act of 1928 for river management. A crest of 57.5 feet, more than a foot above the 1927 high, is expected tomorrow at Vicksburg, while downstream at Natchez the river is forecast to top out May 21 at 63 feet, 5 feet above a 1937 record. “We have the levee there and we’re praying it holds,” said Beth Hite, 53, bartender at Natchez’s Under-the-Hill Saloon, which bills itself as a place where thieves and gamblers roamed in the days when the town was a major riverboat stop. “We have been sandbagging and now they are building those artificial levees.”
