In his latest pieces we see flocks of geese swooping down tree-lined streets and schools of sardines move with the flow of pedestrian traffic (or end up wedged inside a tin can), unexpected symbols against an urban backdrop. This year marks a decade since Roadsworth was charged with 53 counts of public mischief, after which he received considerable public support and was let go with a slap on the wrist. Since then the artist has created artwork for municipalities, exhibitions, and arts festivals around the world.

Massive Art Nouveau-Inspired Mural in Montreal

" Inspired by Czech Art Nouveau painter Alphonse Mucha, the crew created this breathtakingly beautiful five story mural using 500 cans of spray paint in over 50 different colors. “We been doing graffiti for a long time but this is our first large project involving the whole team,” Fluke of A'shop told The Montreal Gazette. “We’re always busy with other projects so we’ve never really had time to let [the reactions to] them sink in. But this mural was just so big and also our last of the season. It was challenge, took us out of our comfort zone. The city gave the group complete control of the project and, luckily, the public ended up loving it. Phlegm, 'Calibrating The Seeing Device', Zagreb.

Graffiti Studies - Wherefore, litterbug? In a series of real-world experiments, people exposed to graffiti, litter and other cues of lawlessness were more likely to commit small crimes, according to a study published today that bolsters the controversial "broken windows" theory of policing.

Graffiti Studies - Wherefore, litterbug?

The idea is that low-level offenses like vandalism and panhandling create an environment that breeds bigger crimes. According to the theory, authorities can help head off serious violence by keeping minor infractions in check. Dutch researchers tested the psychological underpinnings of the theory and found that signs of social disorder damped people's impulse to act for the good of the community, allowing selfish and greedy instincts to take over. The results appear in the journal Science.

Community policing strategies based on the "broken windows" theory have taken root in cities across the U.S. and around the world since it was proposed in 1982. In fact, it's extremely difficult, and that's precisely why these artists deserve so much respect. Over the last couple of years, we've featured many great street artists here at theMET. All of them have different styles and approaches, but they all share one thing in common - their art has left us with a lasting impression. Both have graffiti backgrounds to compliment their skills in photorealism. This creates an interesting contrast in much of their street art. Check out the slick work below along with snippets of information found in an interview the duo did with UK Adapta. Enjoy! Neil: We’ve been painting for about 15 years now and I started in the 54 crew, doing straight up, commercial photorealism pieces. Hadley: I think it’s an anatomical and surgical way of looking at human figures. Neil: How fragile the human body is and how weak we all are as forms. Hadley: Yeah, it’s amazing how fast a body can decay through disease taking over. Hadley: Normally I will start by throwing some paint at the wall and begin to make lines and angles in a very loose style. CLEAN GREEN LIVING GRAFFITI made from moss! We’ve covered reverse graffiti in the past on Inhabitat – a practice which involves creating street art by cleaning soot covered surfaces to inscribe them with images using scrub brushes, scrapers and pressure hoses.

CLEAN GREEN LIVING GRAFFITI made from moss!

Now in Brooklyn we’ve discovered ‘living graffiti’ — an idea which takes the idea of clean graffiti to the next level by creating street art out of living, breathing plants. Eco-minded street artist Edina Tokodi is putting a new spin on green guerilla tactics in the trendy art enclave of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Tokodi’s site-specific moss installations of prancing animal figures and camouflage outgrowths are the talk of a local urban neighborhood typically accustomed to gallery hype and commercial real estate take-overs.

Tokodi believes strongly that the reactions of passersby (or the lack of any reaction at all) is really an indicator of a deeper malaise that we need to pay attention to and reseed with “mentally healthy garden states” and direct interactive engagement. In a city where people were once imprisoned just for saying the wrong things, a celebration of free dialogue has sprung up on the building walls.

A Tour of Buenos Aires Street Art

I found out about the Buenos Aires street art tour put on by Graffiti Mundo from the excellent 91 Days bloggers and was excited to make it a part of my recent visit to Argentina. The tour met on the edge of Palermo Hollywood, where we started with some examples of large scale murals featuring colorful creatures painted with roller brushes over entire buildings. The vibrant, playful works were put up in the early 2000's, when at one point Argentina had five different presidents in two weeks. Protests and angry political declarations were scrawled on buildings throughout Buenos Aires, and some porteño artists decided to collaborate on some positive work to brighten up the streets.
