"Evisceration of waited moments," Stephen J Shanabrook. Photo via aeroplastics.net . Stephen J Shanabrook is a New York and Moscow-based artist who uses food both as medium and metaphor. Using commonplace materials and forms generally seen as benign indulgences— sweets, chocolate, and cotton candy — he brings about disturbing new meanings, exploring the intersections of desire, violence, permanence, and death. (See his "Waterboarding" sculptures — chocolate-waterboarded choir boy Christmas statues — that we covered last week.)

My research has been inspired by female self torture such as corsets and girdles and such artists as Jenny Saville, Karen Lamonte, and jana sterbak. http://www.ashleyzelinskie.com/just-a-sketch/

carsten höller retrospective 'experience' at the new museum

in the first united states retrospective of german artist carsten höller , the new museum in new york brings together works from the past twenty years. höller's approach to art derives from his background of being also a scientist, focusing on phytopathology (the study of plant disease). his practice is reminiscent of research experiments. collectively entitled 'experience', the installations focus on creating a perception altering environment. the visitor is usually immersed in a situation where one or more of their senses are confused, reduced or heightened.
Brooklyn based artist George Boorujy creates impossibly detailed ink paintings of North American birds and other animals, often pouring numerous photographs and visiting zoos where the animals are kept before embarking on a piece. Boorujy challenges the viewer to confront both the animal and their preconceived notions about it. Through their gaze an interaction evolves with the wild that otherwise would have to be sought out or birthed from happenstance. However fleeting our exchanges with the wild are, an impression of their presence marks our memories. There is something mystical at play; a silent exchange that either moves us towards awareness or heightens our fear of the unknown. http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2012/03/remarkable-animals-painted-in-ink-by-george-boorujy/

http://rushmiller.com/index.php/tea-for-three-shunga-inspired-art-by-jeff-faeber-nsfw/ “As one who has “fallen from grace,” as it were, I have a natural interest in the underdog, the discarded and unwanted. Hence, I often paint on or incorporate cardboard, trash, society’s forgotten, landfill-bound material. I react to what I feel is often an overly sanitized, saccharine façade that is projected on us by mass commercialization, or groupthink (or religion or politics or whatever.) There is often beauty in despair.

London-based artist Mark Powell has chosen the backs of old envelopes as a canvas for these delicately rendered portraits of the elderly, using nothing more than a standard Bic Biro pen to create the delicate folds and wrinkles of their skin. http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2012/01/envelope-drawings-by-mark-powell/
