Lesson 9: Cadences. Cadences Cadences are to music as punctuation marks are to sentences. A cadence is a specific progression of two chords, they are especially useful for creating a specific ideas within a piece of music. There are many types of cadences but we'll start with the most common and most important ones. Authentic cadence: A authentic cadence is when we have motion from the dominant or dominant seventh chord (V or V7) to the tonic chord and it starts at the end of one measure and ends at the beginning of another. The authentic cadence is music's period, it's pretty much how every song ever written ends. Example: (each pair of | |'s denotes one measure, the spaces between the /'s are one quarter note) In minor keys authentic cadences move from V (with a raised third so that it is a true dominant) to i. Half cadence: A half cadence is motion from any chord to the dominant (V) starting at the end of one measure and ending at the beginning of another. 4/4 | I / vi / VI / ii | V | Deceptive cadence:

Conventional homophonic and polyphonic patterns are common in serial literature. Certain features of twelve-tone composition affect other factors in a composition. For example, octave and enharmonic equivalence can produce extremely disjunct melody if no restriction is placed on the size of melodic intervals. The composer could distribute the notes in a row as fragments among several voices.

The notes of a row can be distributed among two or more voices, in any octave, sounded one at a time or together as suggested below. A row can appear in melodies, accompaniments, conversational flows, or counterpoint. More than one row can sound at one time. The analyst should not stop at note counting but rather strive to recognize broader patterns of thought. Take time to consider all the the systems that make up the composition such as texture, melody, and rhythm factors. Unaccompanied Melody Accompanied Melody Polyphony Complement 1. 2. Music Sampling in Different Trains This work uses three facets of sampling:- • The fragment may be cut into two parts and repeated against each other, along with a "copy" of the diction in the music (observe tables 2a. to 2g.). This is usually the norm for most of the fragments, except where the sample is too short to be sub-divided, such as in "1941" (first movement).

There are a number of fragments which are used again within the same movement, or in other movements. • Secondly, some of these samples actually reoccur at different pitches, even though the tempo remains the same. (For example, "from New York to Los Angeles" remains at 72 beats/minute, in the first movement it is heard in F minor, whilst in the third it is played in C minor (observe tables l.a. and c)).

At one time, altering the pitch of a sample also altered the duration. . • And finally, Reich occasionally employs the technique of reversing a sample, i.e. playing the fragment from the end to the beginning of the sound. Affective Musical Key Characteristics The association of musical keys with specific emotional or qualitative characteristic was fairly common prior to the 20th century. It was part of the shared cultural experience of those who made, performed and listened to music. When Mozart or Beethoven or Schubert wrote a piece in a Ab major, for example, they were well aware of this was the 'key of the grave' and knew that many in their audiences were as well. We lose a part of the meaning of their music if we are ignorant of their affective choices. Although these characteristics were, of course, subjective, it was possible to conceive of each key as unique because each key actually sounded distinct within unequal temperaments.
