Sussex University is a research-led Higher Education institution using a customised Moodle install called Study Direct. We have 1,500 editing tutors, 15,000 students, 2,099 2012/13 Moodle courses and 13,500 unique hits per day. The e-learning team is a team of five including two developers, one front line support officer, one teaching support officer and one manager.  The Magic of Learning.

e-learning isn't working... but it could be so good!

Sarah works for the University of Sheffield leading the e-learning and digital media team and part time for the Open University as an associate lecturer. e-learning isn’t working…. Okay. That’s a bit controversial… right? And, to be honest, if I didn’t believe in the power and potential of learning in new and non-traditional ways (see how I skirt around calling it ‘e-learning’?)

Problem 1: ‘e-learning is basically IT in education, so it should be part of the IT department’ This fundamentally negates the massively important ‘learning’ part of the word. Problem 2: Most people who end up in e-learning didn’t intend to end up there Over the years I’ve come across so many people who have the appearance of having woken up and found themselves in a job and a career which they never really intended happening.
