Climate crisis pushes albatross ‘divorce’ rates higher – study. Albatrosses, some of the world’s most loyally monogamous creatures, are “divorcing” more often – and researchers say global heating may be to blame.

Climate crisis pushes albatross ‘divorce’ rates higher – study

In a new Royal Society study, researchers say climate change and warming waters are pushing black-browed albatross break-up rates higher. Typically after choosing a partner, only 1-3% would separate in search of greener romantic pastures. But in the years with unusually warm water temperatures, that average consistently rose, with up to 8% of couples splitting up. The study looked at a wild population of 15,500 breeding pairs in the Falkland Islands over 15 years. For seabirds, warmer waters mean less fish, less food and a harsher environment. Street performers: Imogen Stone and Zane and Degge Jarvie - Regional News

Zane: Degge [my brother] and my journeys are pretty much the same. We grew up going to juggling festivals and we made our way onto renegade stages from a young age. I think we knew really early on that juggling and comedy were our jam. Imogen: I grew up as a gymnastics and ballet kid, finding my way into the circus when I was about 11 years old – The Circus Hub in Newtown became my whole world. That included having extended seasons of some experiences running across the summer months, more large-scale Kiwi-made experiences than ever before, and the appointment of artist-in-focus Lisa Reihana, who is bringing a major series of free works to the festival. In the 125 years since, that coverage has broadened and deepened. The Book Review has become a lens through which to view not just literature but the world at large, with scholars and thinkers weighing in on all of the people and issues and subjects covered in books on philosophy, art, science, economics, history and more. In many ways, the Book Review’s history is that of American letters, and we’ll be using our 125th anniversary this year to celebrate and examine that history over the coming months.
