As a neuroscientist who specialises in the study of the ageing brain, I was intrigued to read about the last months in the life of the writer Roald Dahl, who died in November 1990.

Then 74, Dahl had endured various health problems, including two bowel operations and failing eyesight. According to his authorised biographer David Sturrock, Dahl walked like ‘an arthritic giraffe’. However, in January 1990, just nine months before his death, he went on holiday to Jamaica. Given his medical history, a long-haul trip might not have seemed such a sensible idea. ‘He was like a grizzled lion surrounded by three glamorous lionesses,’ wrote Sturrock.
