Demand your liberties before they are taken - The Drum Opinion - Last week the Attorney-General made two largely unreported announcements which potentially involve major incursions into, and erosion of, liberties. Find More Stories Demand your liberties before they are taken Greg Barns Last week was a busy one for Attorney-General Nicola Roxon and a dangerous one for the citizens of this nation. Ms Roxon announced on May 4 that she wanted to give law enforcement agencies the power to bug phones and intercept emails for up to six months, and on the same day she, and her junior minister Jason Clare, announced a series of agreements with the US secretary of homeland security Janet Napolitano on data sharing. These two announcements ought to alarm Australians because both potentially involve major incursions into, and erosion of, liberties. Ms Roxon has requested the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Intelligence and Security look at changes to existing national security laws so that ASIO and other agencies like the Australian Federal Police can intercept telecommunications for six months before having to renew their power – currently it is a 90-day limit.

Virgin Atlantic, the airline that stopped Australian human rights lawyer Jen Robinson last Thursday and told her she was on an “inhibited list” that required approval from the Australian High Commission to return home, has told Crikey that “security services” were responsible for the incident and directed further questions to the British Home Office.

The stopping of Robinson, who was later allowed to board her Heathrow flight to Sydney via Hong Kong without any contact being made with Australia House, caused a furore that Attorney-General Nicola Roxon says prompted the government to request the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade – initially suspected by Robinson of being behind the incident – to seek an explanation from the UK. The term “inhibited” is used by the US Department of Homeland Security to refer to passengers who should not be given access to aircraft or “sterile” areas of international airports without additional on-the-spot government approval.

Permanent Mission of Sweden in Geneva - 7 October, UPR 12th session - Syria. Lawyers furious over Assange lawyer's Heathrow debacle | The New Lawyer CCBN. An Australian human rights lawyer and Wikileaks representative has reportedly been placed on a watch list, and requires permission from the Department of Foreign Affairs to fly home. Julian Assange’s lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, says she was stopped at Heathrow Airport this morning, just days after meeting with the Wikileaks founder. Australian Lawyers Alliance national President Greg Barns today expressed grave concern at the placing of lawyer Jennifer Robinson on a ‘no fly list’. “The ALA is extremely concerned that simply because a lawyer is representing a client that government does not like, the lawyer is then subjected to security scrutiny,” Barns said.

“The UK and Australian governments must come clean as to why Ms Robinson was subjected to this treatment at Heathrow airport today and why she is on any sort of security list,” he said. The Department of Foreign Affairs told The Sydney Morning Herald it was not aware of any Australian government restrictions on Robinson’s travel. Statement Regarding Lawyer Jennifer Robinson's Interception -- LONDON and SYDNEY, April 19, 2012.

LONDON and SYDNEY, April 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Recent reports indicate that Australian citizen, lawyer, and Rhodes Scholar, Jennifer Robinson, was intercepted at London Airport prior to boarding a Sydney-bound flight and advised that the Australian High Commission needed to be consulted prior to her departure. Robinson, a member of the Commonwealth Law Association (CLA) executive who represented fellow Australian Julian Assange, is due to speak at the Commonwealth Law Conference tomorrow 20 April at the session entitled, "Lawyers on the Frontline" (4 - 5.30 pm at the Sydney Convention Centre, Darling Harbour). The CLA believes these reports, if accurate, raise profound issues concerning the independence of lawyers and their clients.

The CLA points out that Article 13 of the UN Principles on the Role of Lawyers sets out clearly that "lawyers shall not be identified with their clients or their clients' causes as a result of discharging their functions. " For further information: Assange's lawyer 'on travel watch list' London-based human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson said on Thursday Heathrow airport authorities had informed her she was on an "inhibited travel list" and needed special permission to return to Australia.

She said on Twitter security guards had told her "you must have done something controversial" because we have to phone the embassy. Australian lawyers and human rights organisations have reacted angrily to the incident. Ms Roxon, a former lawyer, is due to speak at Commonwealth Regional Law Conference in Sydney on Friday and is expected to face a grilling on the issue. Ms Robinson was travelling to Sydney to also address the lawyers conference. The departments of Foreign Affairs and Immigration have denied any knowledge of travel restrictions on Ms Robinson and said UK border authorities and the airline might be able to provide insight into the claims.

He said the incident raised "profound issues concerning the independence of lawyers and their clients. " Exclusive: Assange on 'The World Tomorrow' premiere (full version) The Zelikow Memo: Internal Critique of Bush Torture Memos Declassified. Washington, DC, April 3, 2012 – The State Department today released a February 2006 internal memo from the Department's then-counselor opposing Justice Department authorization for "enhanced interrogation techniques" by the CIA. All copies of the memo (Document 1), which reflect strong internal disagreement within the George W.

Bush administration over the constitutionality of such techniques, were thought to have been destroyed. But the State Department located a copy and declassified it in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by the National Security Archive. The author of the memo, Philip D. Zelikow, counselor to then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, described the context of the memo in congressional testimony on May 13, 2009, and in an article he had previously published on foreignpolicy.com site on April 21, 2009. "At the time, in 2005 [and 2006]," he wrote, "I circulated an opposing view of the legal reasoning.

Prime Minister did not tell Mastercard to block Wikileaks donations – News – ABC Technology and Games. A viral Tweet which alleges Australia's Prime Minister and Attorney General ordered Mastercard to block donations to Wikileaks has been rubbished by Mastercard. The Tweet, which also gave the name and phone number of a Mastercard executive, went viral after being retweeted by Wikileaks supporters and Wikileaks itself. However, the same executive subsequently told ABC Technology, "That is absolutely not what I said" and that it was "Absolutely our decision given the serious nature of the allegations". The story broke as Wikileaks and its supporters plan to mark Julian Assange's detention in the UK for 500 days without charge, on April 20.

[Update] It transpires that the Tweet was based upon and email which describes a conversation between a Wikileaks supporter and the Mastercard executive. The email states, "He said that they have every right to stop dealing with whoever they want to.

Courthouse News Service. Journalists Begin, Finally, to Stand Up in Defense of WikiLeaks and Freedom of Information. Share Leading Australian journalists have stepped up in a big way to defend WikiLeaks, with the head of the nation's major media union arguing that "attacks on WikiLeaks can also be seen as attacks on the Australian media outlets which have worked with the organisation to publish leaked material. " In response to calls for the prosecution of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (an Australian) and attempts to block the distribution of leaked US diplomatic cables, Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance federal secretary Christopher Warren says: "Allegations that the work of WikiLeaks is somehow illegal are yet to be proven in Australia, or in any other country. The Alliance and (the International Federation of Journalists Asia-Pacific section) calls on governments to refrain from prejudicial speculation that risks harming our democratic system.

James Ball: a Portrait of Petty Cheat as a Young Man. James Ball: a Portrait of the Petty Cheat as a Young Man By Israel Shamir Cheats and thieves have to prove their moral superiority over their victims in order to justify their crimes. This is the case with a petty cheat and thief called James Ball. This young man was a hired hand in the Wikileaks; he was offered a bribe of a job by the Guardian and he gratefully accepted it, betraying Julian Assange's trust and stealing all he could put his sweaty hands on. Since then, he is obsessed with demeaning and debunking Assange: only moral disgrace of the Australian will reduce the burden of the traitor's guilt. One of his favourite routes is attacking Assange for associating with me, and today he did it again in the Guardian, responding to my recent piece Unmanning the Man.

His arguments are repetitious, baseless and lame: I am called "anti-Semite", "H-denier" and "the man who gave the State Department secrets to Lukashenko" time and again. Nowhere the Guardian responds to my valid observations: Wikileaks, the Espionage Act, and the Constitution. Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. SUFFOLK, UK – Notorious ladies’ man and truth-pusher Julian Assange remains on mansion-arrest, stemming from allegations of consensual sex. Reporters are camped outside the Ellingham Hall estate he’s been confined to, hoping to catch a glimpse of what a real journalist looks like. Some female reporters – although a few males as well – have begun throwing their bras and business cards at Assange every time he leaves to sign the same book for fans at the local police station.

Historians and human rights experts believe this book, filled with hundreds of Assange’s autographs, will be worth big money someday, when truth again becomes relevant. The Washington Fancy has been piecing together the fascinating interchange between these intrepid reporters and Assange: NYTimes: Mr. Assange: Why would–? NYTimes: It means following rules, sir. Assange: Whose rules? Assange: That’s a great question. Will Peter King learn The Guardian's role in the Wikileaks Affair? Home » Industry Watch (» The Technological) (» Hall of Monkeys) (» Heroes Banquet) An history of Daniel Schmitt/Domscheit-Berg and WikiLeaks. Transcribed from the database of DDB activities used for the articles at Rixstep. This is the story of Daniel Berg aka Daniel Schmitt aka Daniel Domscheit-Berg, one of the many collaborators with WikiLeaks in the 'nascent period' up to but not including the big releases of 2010.

Daniel was an employee of the US storage giant EDS in Rüsselsheim Germany when he heard about WikiLeaks. Daniel's not a programmer - and certainly not a hacker - but seemed to 'dabble' in political topics such as 'anarchy' and transparency. But we're getting ahead of our story. The following data was culled over the past few months when the opportunity (and the inclination) came to research Daniel's bizarre life and relationship with WikiLeaks and the website's founder Julian Assange.

Santorini August 2011 Milestones The high points in Daniel's career. October 2006 December 2006. “Inside WikiLeaks”: Revenge Of The Second Banana - By Ramon Glazov. From The eXiled’s Special Australasia Correspondent PERTH, AUSTRALIA–First, the Right accused WikiLeaks of endangering US soldiers and Afghan informers. Then after “Cablegate” the neocons conceded to the lack of evidence and switched to the opposite tactic: insisting there was nothing exciting at all about Julian Assange’s leaks. Spectator editorials appeared, claiming we already knew Sarkozy was a narcissist and Berlusconi was a womaniser.

This didn’t work either. Now a much easier way to discredit WikiLeaks has emerged: attacking Assange as a human being. At the moment, Assange’s most notable competitor is a squishy little Kraut by the name of Daniel Domscheit-Berg (better abbreviated to “Shite”) who worked for WikiLeaks until last September. Domscheit-Berg’s attack on Julian Assange has been three-pronged. You see, Domscheit-Berg’s main advantage over his Australian adversary is his blandness. She worked for Microsoft on open government projects. This is Anke, Daniel’s equal. Pentagon Prepares for Possible WikiLeaks Publication. Pentagon Prepares for Possible WikiLeaks Publication By Jim GaramoneAmerican Forces Press Service WASHINGTON, Oct. 22, 2010 – The Defense Department is preparing for an additional publication by WikiLeaks of classified military documents from Iraq operations, DOD officials said here today.

A DOD task force has been combing through the Iraq data base to assess the damage that a proposed WikiLeaks publication of 400,000 significant activity reports could pose to the U.S. military, Iraqi allies, and on-going operations. “We strongly condemn the unauthorized disclosure of classified information and will not comment on these leaked documents other than to note that ‘significant activities’ reports are initial, raw observations by tactical units,” Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell told reporters. “They are essentially snapshots of events, both tragic and mundane, and do not tell the whole story.
