from the wow dept This story is almost too crazy to believe. WIPO, the UN agency that more or less acts as the global IP maximalist agenda-setter , is now being accused of defying UN sanctions, by shipping computers and servers to North Korea . http://www.techdirt.com/index.php
I recently attended The Creators Project in San Francisco, a globe-roaming two day free event that celebrates an eclectic mix of avant-garde music and arts installations, and attracted tens of thousands of people. It could have easily been re-named " The Curators Project" because of the superb collection of bands, artists, installations, and even food trucks -- all carefully selected by a small team of curators. (The Googleplex at night) The UK newspaper The Guardian, claims that Google's Android operating system is far less valuable than Google's revenues from Apple devices. Touching the screen on a tablet is different from using a laptop with a keyboard. Intel's market research shows that despite tired arms ('gorilla arms') users like to touch.

After the Associated Press published an article on March 20th about employers asking job candidates for Facebook and social media passwords, the response was, to say the least, overwhelming. In the month since, there have been thousands of tweets and social media status updates, more than 2,000 blog posts, and hundreds of news articles on the "trend." Legislation was proposed in at least three states, and by April 9th, Maryland had hastily passed a bill. Even the federal government got involved, with Congressional committees planning hearings on the issue. For its part, Facebook reiterated its service terms, which prohibit members from sharing their passwords with anyone. http://www.readwriteweb.com/

http://boingboing.net/ By Cory Doctorow at 5:47 pm Tuesday, Apr 3 • 12 Comments • Share On IO9, Ron Miller has published a selection from his collection of photos of 1970s cosplayers, dating from a costuming epoch where nudity was a lot more common than it is today. Among the clothed pictures (not reproduced here) is one shot of Elfquest co-creator Wendy Pini as one of her own elves. One thing I noticed in going through the slides — mostly taken at Worldcon masquerades and a few other cons — is the great sense of whimsy that permeated SF costuming decades ago. This is something that seems to be missing, now that costuming is taken so much more seriously. I recognize a lot pros in some of those old pictures, too — such as Elfquest creator Wendy Pini as one of her own characters.

http://www.neatorama.com/ We know how they feel about pizza , mirrors and pumpkins , but how do they feel about Easter? As it turns out, big kitties like their special eggs just as much as house cats love it when you drop a chicken egg on the kitchen floor. If you had a crush on the TARDIS from the Neil Gaiman episode of Doctor Who, well, you can now finally cuddle up and sleep with the it. Granted, this one is not the adorable girl from The Doctor’s Wife , but the sock monkey version is pretty darn cute anyway.

Isn’t it delightful how geek culture works? During my Christmas shopping last year, I stumbled into a favorite little pop culture shop in Little Collins Street in Melbourne which is well known for its comprehensive stocking of all things Lovecraftian. I was looking for some stocking fillers for the kids; instead I walked out with [...]
